Boyle EyeWorld Senior Staff Writer Glaucoma Day offers diagnostic, surgical highlights The subspecialty day will feature presentations on hot topics in the field of glaucoma, for both comprehensive and specialist ophthalmologists T his year's ASCRS Glaucoma Day 2014 will feature topics including surgery, imaging, med- ications, and lasers for glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, with additional talks from crossover and healthcare perspectives. "This year's theme is cutting- edge technologies combined with answers to clinical diagnostic and therapeutic questions from the real world for practitioners to use the day they go back home," said Douglas J. Rhee, MD, Cleveland. Dr. Rhee is chair of the Program Planning Committee. The ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee is sponsoring the event, which will be held on Friday, April 25. Dr. Rhee will open the program at 8:00 a.m. with an official welcome, and the program will adjourn at 4:30 p.m. About the day ASCRS Glaucoma Day 2014 will feature take-home messages on glaucoma diagnosis and surgical treatment that should benefit physi- cians immediately, Dr. Rhee said. The program will be rich in informa- tion for those attending, he said. "We have a lot of content and we have great speakers. I'm excited —[the committee] did a great job," Dr. Rhee said. Planning for the meeting in- volved looking at ways of featuring the hottest topics across the spec- trum of glaucoma management, he said. Those topics, which had to impact comprehensive as well as specialist glaucoma physicians on a daily basis, include how to most ef- fectively treat patients with varying subsets of the disease or what treat- ment is the best option for certain patients. "We tried to highlight the cur- rent controversies in diagnosis and medicine," he said. "We're not look- ing at esoteric things, we're looking at things that are practical: What is it that daily practitioners, both comprehensive and glaucoma specialist alike, are looking for?" "When they are in the office, what clinical questions, both diag- nostically and management-wise, do they have about the patients sitting in front of them?" he said. "This Glaucoma Day is going to try to answer as many of those ques- tions as we can from the diagnostic side, from the medication therapeu- tic side, from the laser therapeutic side," Dr. Rhee said. Another question the day will seek to answer is if microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures are being used by a majority of physicians. Other questions related to that are if they are, how are those procedures being incorporated into practices and how are potential complications being managed. "Then we have an interesting talk on health policy—what does the future hold for the policy side for ophthalmology, glaucoma medi- cine? What does that look like? That's a pretty hot topic," he said.
