E W Boston 2014 52 March 2014 by Rich Daly EyeWorld Contributing Writer ASCRS to feature international perspective Revamped international session will offer attendees the best of cataract and refractive research from latest annual meetings of overseas surgical societies C ataract and refractive symposia at the 2014 ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress in B oston will feature a revamped session with leading inter- national research. The Combined Symposia of C ataract and Refractive Societies on Sunday, April 27 from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. revised its format from previous meetings to feature presentations and discussions of the leading research from the annual meetings of various international surgical societies. T he symposium will emphasize the various techniques and tech- nologies being pursued in different regions of the world. The modera- tors are Edward J. Holland, MD, Graham D. Barrett, FRACO, and William C. De La Peña, MD. The featured research was selected by the programming com- m ittees of ASCRS, the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (APACRS), the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), and the Latin American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ALACCSA- R/LASCRS). Presentations include "Aspheric P resbyopic Correction With the Light Adjustable Intraocular Lens" by Arturo S. Chayet, MD; "When Are Phakic IOLs Indicated" by Thomas Kohnen, MD; "ICL Implantation in Eyes With Keratoconus" by María José Cosentino, MD; and "Pediatric Toric Implantation" by Abhay R. Vasavada, MS, FRCS. Updating astigmatism approaches Continuing challenges and emerg- ing developments in astigmatism will be the focus of the ASCRS Refractive Surgery Clinical Commit- tee's symposium on astigmatism management on Saturday, April 26 f rom 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The session, moderated by Doyle Stulting, MD, and John A. Vukich, MD, will include panel discussions with Michael O'Keefe, MB, BAO, Louis E. Probst, MD, Jonathan B. Rubenstein, MD, Charles D. Reilly, MD, and William B. Trattler, MD. Updates on longstanding astig- matism challenges will begin with Dr. Vukich's presentation of the 2013 ASCRS Clinical Survey results on astigmatism. Steve C. Schallhorn, MD, will present "What Does Normal Look Like: Learnings Derived From a Large Database," and Scott M. MacRae, MD, will present on "Astig- matism: How Various Magnitudes and Manifestations Impact Optical Quality and Patient Satisfaction." Among the new areas of astig- matism research is Douglas D. Koch, MD's, "Posterior Cornea: Is This the Hidden Factor?" Astigmatism's impact on in- traocular lens implantation will be explored by "Post Premium IOL: How Much Residual Error is Accept- able and What To Do About It?" by Karl Stonecipher, MD, and "Maxi- mizing Toric IOL Results: Keys to Measuring and Aligning to the Cor- rect Axis" by Jay S. Pepose, MD. Attendees will also find a focus on astigmatic correction in "Correc- tion of Astigmatism With Laser Vision Correction" by Edward Manche, MD, and "Correction of Astigmatism With LRI" by Kerry D. Solomon, MD. Doyle Stulting, MD, will wrap up the symposium with a presenta- tion titled "Nuts and Bolts of Man- aging Astigmatism: The Key Calculations You Really Need to Know." T he Journal of Cataract & Refrac- tive Surgery will present a Monday, April 28 symposium from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. titled "Focus on Tech- nique: What the Anterior Segment Surgeon Needs to Know in 2014." The session will be moderated by William J. Dupps Jr., MD, and Nick Mamalis, MD. Understanding postop problems Surgeons can delve into the prob- l ems and solutions to conditions that arise after surgery in a Monday, April 28 symposium from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. titled "Problems Postop: Pain and Inflammation in the Refractive Surgery Patient." The ses- sion, which is sponsored by CLAO, will incorporate the 2013 Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Lecture by Shigeru Kinoshita, MD, titled "Stem Cell Therapy for Corneal Endothelial Disease." The symposium, moderated by Deborah S. Jacobs, MD, Deepinder K. Dhaliwal, MD, and Warren R. Fagadau, MD, will begin with "Innovations in Limbal Stem Cell Transplantation" by Virender Sangwan, MD. Jod S. Mehta, MD, will present "Innovations in Lamellar Kerato- plasty," Marjan Farid, MD, will present "Innovations in Femtosec- ond Laser-Assisted Keratoplasty," and Neda Shamie, MD, will discuss "Innovations in Endothelial Kerato- plasty: DSAEK." A presentation on "Innovations in Endothelial Keratoplasty: DMEK" will be followed by "Innovations in Keratoprosthesis" by Kathryn Colby, MD. Updating femtosecond use Surgeons will find a range of updates in the surgical use of femtosecond laser systems in a Tuesday, April 29 symposium from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., "Femtosecond Laser Refractive Cataract Surgery." The interactive symposium aims to provide an up- date on the refractive cataract sur- gery uses of the femtosecond laser but not as a comparison of plat- forms. The session will feature pan- elist comparisons of femtosecond outcomes and manual procedure A SCRS•ASOA Preview • A pril 25–29, 2014 ASCRS Foundation/TearLab Run for Sight event The Run for Sight 5K, 1-mile walk will benefit the ASCRS Foundation and its domestic and international humanitarian eyecare projects H elp prevent cataract blindness here at home and around the world with an early morning charity run at the ASCRS Foundation/TearLab Run for Sight on Sunday, April 27. The event will feature a 5K run and a 1- mile walk. It will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m., on Boston's Castle Island, Fort Independence, 2080 William J. Day Blvd. The run last year in San Francisco raised more than $42,000 for the Foundation's continuing humanitarian programs, which include treating cataract blindness in the U.S. and overseas. More than 330 runners took part in the 5-kilometer run through Golden Gate Park last April. All monies raised through the Run for Sight directly benefit needy patients. The race will start and finish on Boston's historic Castle Island and include views of the city and Boston Harbor. Bus transportation to and from the race site will be provided from area hotels and the Convention Center, and all participants will receive a race t-shirt with their registration.
