March 2014 by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Staff Writer Film Festival back for another year The ASCRS Film Festival prepares for another year and leadership changes T his yearÕs ASCRS Film Festival will see changes, but those changes will mainly be to its leader- ship. Richard Hoffman, MD, clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University, Eugene, Ore., will be replacing William Fishkind, MD, Fishkind, Bakewell & Maltzman Eye Care, Tucson, Ariz., as the chairman of the event. Both commented on what can be expected for this yearÕs Film Festival. ÒI donÕt think that someone attending the ASCRS meeting can get a broader sense of whatÕs new and exciting in ophthalmology anywhere but the Film Festival,Ó Dr. Fishkind said. ÒThe Film Festival always highlights the newest tech- niques, the newest technology, and the latest ideas that permeate cataract surgery, refractive surgery and other surgeries, as well as other methodologies that we use on a regular basis in taking care of our patients.Ó He said that he is excited to go to the Film Festival and judge because there is always something new to learn and see. Despite being involved for a number of years, Dr. Fishkind said he learns something new each year. ÒIf you look at the films that are chosen in each of the categories, youÕre going to see the latest think- ing in ophthalmology and even sometimes politicallyÑin terms of cataract complications, refractive complications, new instruments, new technology, itÕs all there,Ó he said. ÒAll you have to do is attend or take the time to go to the kiosks and look at the videos.Ó Participants and popular topics Dr. Hoffman estimated there will be around 200 participants, comparable to previous years. ÒThe most popular topics are usually complication management and new techniques,Ó he said. Dr. Fishkind said that he had predicted that femtosecond laser technology would be a big topic at last yearÕs Film Festival, but it did not receive quite as much attention as he thought. ÒI do think, however, femtosecond cataract surgery is still a hot topic, and now having it out there for a few years, we may start to see more of the complications of femtosecond cataract surgery. I will be looking for some videos on that,Ó he said.
