Ophthalmologist finds new
dimensions in the triathlon
M
ost ophthalmologists
pat themselves on the
back for getting to the
gym a few times a
week or doing an
occasional yoga class. But for Audrey Talley Rostov, M.D., cornea,
cataract, and refractive surgeon and
partner, Northwest Eye Surgeons,
Seattle, the gym is a minuscule part
of the weekly routine that she has
established for participating in
"sprint" triathlons. These races,
which are half the distance of an
Olympic triathlon, are marked by a
750-meter open water swim,
followed by 15-20 miles on bicycle,
and then capped by a 5K run.
Dr. Talley Rostov's zest for
triathlons began when she was try-
ing to get back into shape after the
birth of her son.
"Since I was getting back into
running and swimming again, one
of my girlfriends said, 'Why don't
you do a triathlon?'" Dr. Talley
Rostov recalled. "I hadn't even
heard of the sport." After her friend
explained it, Dr. Talley Rostov
thought about it and decided to
sign up for her first sprint triathlon.
"I did it and I just loved it," Dr.
Talley Rostov said. "I was hooked."
The discipline was a natural for
Dr. Talley Rostov, who liked to cycle
and who had always enjoyed running and swimming. "In medical
school and during residency, what
kept me going was swimming," she
said. "I always enjoyed cycling,
although I hadn't done a lot of it or
any distance or competitive cycling
until I first went into practice." Likewise, while she had done some run-
ning for stress release during the
intense medical school years, competitively it had been limited to a
few short 5K runs.
