UPDATE 17 alerts or position statements. Due to an increased number of reports of complications with cosmetic iris implants, ASCRS worked with the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery(ESCRS), the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (APACRS) and Asociación latinoamericana de Ciru- janos de Catarata Segmento Anterior y Refractiva/Latin American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ALACCSA-R/LASCRS) to issue a clin- ical alert in December 2016, "Ocular Complications of Cosmetic Anterior Chamber Iris Implants." This alert association with the use of intracam- eral vancomycin, an HORV clinical alert was published in the July 2016 issue of EyeWorld magazine. Andre Witkin, MD, (ASRS), authored a paper on HORV and vancomycin findings from each of these cases, which will be published soon in Ophthalmology. Clinical alert: Ocular complications of cosmetic anterior chamber iris implants Our committee strives to keep AS- CRS membership informed regard- ing issues such as patient safety and ophthalmic practices by issuing well as adverse effects and contrain- dications. Ophthalmic instrument cleaning and sterilization task force Members of our committee played an integral role in helping ASCRS work with other societies on vital issues to our field. ASCRS has been leading a task force focused on the cleaning and sterilization of intra- ocular instruments, along with the American Academy of Ophthalmol- ogy (AAO), Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society (OOSS), and the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. In addition to meeting with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the task force met with both the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) specifically on the issue of individual instrument companies requiring enzymatic detergent use in the cleaning/sterilization process of intraocular ophthalmic instru- ments. In December 2015, ASCRS, AAO, and OOSS released a joint advisory warning about the poten- tial for enzymatic detergent to cause toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS). Studies have shown that while following the manufacturers' DFUs, even the slightest enzyme residue can cause TASS. A new study has suggested that enzyme residues may persist despite proper rinsing. The task force has requested in- traocular instrument manufacturers validate cleaning instructions with- out enzymatic detergent and update DFUs accordingly. In addition, the task force is developing updated cleaning and sterilization guidelines for ophthalmic surgical instruments. HORV task force We played a key role in the ASCRS and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) collaboration in a joint hemorrhagic occlusive retinal vasculitis (HORV) Task Force. In their survey of the ASCRS member- ship, 22 cases of HORV were report- ed. Because there has been a strong O ver the last 4 decades, ASCRS has continuously valued innovation and guidance from ophthalmic leaders. As key part of bol- stering this effort and the society's mission, ASCRS has established numerous committees that consist of physician leaders who help guide members in clinical specialty areas, education, and government. We are pleased to start high- lighting the tremendous work of the ASCRS Clinical Committees in EyeWorld. This month features the dedicated efforts of the ASCRS Cata- ract Clinical Committee. As chair of the ASCRS Cataract Clinical Committee for the past 2 years, I lead a dynamic group of sur- geons. We work tirelessly through- out the year to support and promote relevant and timely cataract surgical topics and provide clinical advice to members. In case you've wondered just what it is we've been up to, below is summary of some of our completed and ongoing projects that we've been working on recently. Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS) review paper, "Cataract surgery and nonste- roidal antiinflammatory drugs" In the September 2016 JCRS, mem- bers of the committee published peer-reviewed paper "Cataract surgery and nonsteroidal antiinflam- matory drugs." The paper discusses the potential preoperative, intra- operative, and postoperative uses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including the potency, indi- cations, and treatment paradigms, as by Richard S.
