UPDATE by Natalie Zundel ASCRS Foundation Development Director Find out more about the ASCRS Foundation at the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress T hanks to volunteer sur- geons, donors, corporate supporters, and nonprofit partners, the ASCRS Foun- dation was able to give sight to a record number of individ- uals in 2016. Our Operation Sight cataract program helped provide 600 free surgeries to needy American patients, and our Robert Sinskey Eye Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, served a record 22,000 patients. Through partnerships with six like-minded organizations, the foun- dation is working to address the root cause of global cataract blindness— the drastic shortage of eye surgeons in developing countries. Help us to maintain this mo- mentum through 2017 and beyond by participating in a foundation ac- tivity at the upcoming ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress this May in Los Angeles. Run for Sight Calling all runners and walkers! Join the ASCRS Foundation on Sun- day, May 7 at 6:30 a.m. for the 5th Annual Run for Sight, co-sponsored by TearLab (San Diego) and Shire (Lexington, Massachusetts). Fea- turing a 5K run and a 1-mile walk, this healthy lifestyle event will raise money for the ASCRS Foundation's ongoing charitable work, while also helping to burn off some of those conference calories. All race proceeds go to support the founda- tion's humanitarian cataract surgery programs in the United States and Ethiopia. This year's Run for Sight will start and finish at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and early-morn- ing bus transportation will be pro- vided from area hotels. All partici- pants receive a race T-shirt and one Tesla raffle ticket. Register online (www.tracs.net/ascrs5k) or on site at the ASCRS Foundation booth. #GiveSight #50Phaco50 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of phacoemulsification and to recog- nize this important milestone, the ASCRS Foundation is asking attend- ees to consider a gift of $50 to ex- tend the benefits of cataract surgery to those who might otherwise go untreated. Attendees who give when registering for the meeting or onsite will receive special recognition for their Phaco50 gift and one Tesla raffle ticket (limit three) for each $50 they contribute.
