12 EW NEWS & OPINION December 2013 BBC continued from page 11 Dr. Rutherford has earned a reputation as an innovative thinker taking a new look at ideas about creation, synthetic biology, and evolution. He has gained a wide audience in the U.K. and beyond with his television series, articles, and interviews. His first book, Creation, was recently released in the U.K and the U.S. and earned praise from the Financial Times, the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Observer, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and Smithsonian Magazine, which raved: "It's rather elegant, moving through the mechanisms of molecular biology to explore the underlying questions of when and how life began. Dr. Rutherford is careful not to get too starry-eyed about any of the people or experiments he depicts ... through Rutherford's eminently sensible lens, it's hard not to get excited." In January 2012 Dr. Rutherford made Horizon: Playing God for BBC 2, a documentary marking the rise of synthetic biology. He has also made Men In White for Channel 4, and Genome and The Cell for BBC 4. The • 2012: Michael T.
