A S C R S World view The clinical value dossier S The official publication of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery December 2013 Volume 18 • No. 12 P U B L I S H I N G S TA F F omething new is happening at ASCRS. It is at once subtle, simple, and intuitive. The concept of developing a clinical value dossier is helping to shape the educational goals of the Society. A clinical value dossier is a collection of papers, presentations, and ongoing research that represents our best current understanding of a John Vukich, MD, topic. It is designed to filter the noise and prointernational editor vide a framework for education directed at targeted objectives. You can think of it as a kind of course syllabus. On an annual basis, the ASCRS Clinical Committees will prioritize a limited number of the most important topics and will incorporate them into the multiple educational venues controlled by the Society. This is similar to what we are already doing but adds a new element of coordination that brings synergy to the process. So how does this work? For 2014, the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee has identified five topics related to astigmatism that are central to patient care. These topics will be a recurring theme in the annual educational effort of the Society. Meeting symposia, webinars, EyeWorld magazine, and JCRS will devote a portion of their content to the latest thinking related to these specific topics. As always, the content will represent the latest evidence-based information presented by the experts. The difference is that there is a theme that unites the content across venues. New as well is the ability to track the impact of the educational effort. The ASCRS Clinical Survey provides a snapshot of our commonly held beliefs. This annual survey allows us to reconcile what we currently understand with the best evidence-based literature. In certain instances the two may not coincide. This represents an educational gap and would be an area of attention in the educational programing. The goal of the clinical value dossier is to align resources and use them to their fullest potential. We hope you enjoy this final issue of EyeWorld for 2013. It marks the beginning of a new phase in education for ASCRS. If we do our jobs well, over the course of the next year we will all understand a little better how to optimize visual outcomes by managing astigmatism.
