64 EW MEETING REPORTER Reporting live from the 2013 European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons Congress, Amsterdam November 2013 "Since ablation procedures change the anterior corneal curvature only, we take away the clues as to how much posterior corneal astigmatism might be present," he said. He told attendees that for patients who have already received treatment, it is important to have improved anterior and posterior BSS PLUS® Sterile Intraocular Irrigating Solution (balanced salt solution enriched with bicarbonate, dextrose, and glutathione) can do what normal saline or balanced salt solutions can't. With nutrients that help protect against post-op cell and tissue damage, BSS Plus® sterile intraocular irrigating solution is designed to provide corneal detumescence while maintaining corneal integrity and retinal electrical activity.1 All with the convenience and added safety of our new plastic packaging. He said in the future, more uniform optical zones are needed to maintain the optical zone size, with better registration and tracking to treat higher order aberrations and better wavefront-based treatments. "It's an exciting challenge— there's much to be done, and we're making great progress," he said. Three hot topics in cataract, refractive surgery debated in JCRS symposium Six leading ophthalmologists debated hot topics in the cataract and refractive subspecialties at the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Symposium. H. Burkhard Dick, MD, Bochum, Germany, and David Chang, MD, Los Altos, Calif. debated "Will femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery represent a real paradigm shift in future cataract surgery?" Dr. Dick discussed his experience using the Catalys (OptiMedica/Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, Calif.), and Dr. Chang discussed how, while the technology provides new possibilities in cataract surgery, there are issues, including cost, that are still unaddressed. "There is no question that this technology is amazing. I think it's a 'wow' technology, and I want to acknowledge [Dr. Dick] and all of the pioneers who are doing terrific work with this," Dr. Chang said. However, he said there are still key questions and concerns that he would like answered personally. "I think we can say without a doubt, it's here to stay," he said. "But what we don't yet know is what is the evidence in terms of the real advantages and disadvantages." Noel Alpins, MD, Melbourne, Australia, and David Hardten, MD, Minneapolis, Minn., debated "Is excimer laser treatment of suspected keratoconic eyes justified?" Hiroko Bissen-Miyajima, MD, Tokyo, Japan, and Graham Barrett, MD, Perth, Australia, debated "What is the best solution for presbyopic cataract or RLE eyes?"
