T his year's Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology meeting was held in conjunction with the All India Ophthalmological Society in Hyderabad, India, a diverse and quickly growing city in one of the largest countries in the world. Kasu Prasad Reddy, MRCOphth, a physician based in Hyderabad, spoke to EyeWorld about practicing ophthalmology in the country. He discussed his start in the specialty and his current practice in innovative medicine at his Maxivision Eye Hospital clinics throughout India. EyeWorld: Why did you become an ophthalmologist? Dr. Reddy: I did not become an ophthalmologist—I was thrown into it. I started as a general surgeon in India and left for the U.K. in 1978. There I did four years of orthopedics Source (all): Kasu Prasad Reddy, MRCOphth and accident and emergency, then one year of neurosurgery. In 1983, I got in to ophthalmology at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and fell in love with the specialty, with two great Indian teachers in the U.K. guiding me all along. I would like to add that for young ophthalmologists, I reflect hope, having done different surgical specialties, jack of all and master of none, including aviation medicine from Farnborough in the U.K., with a British private license. I am the story of a small-time ophthalmologist who changed gears and got on the fast track to achieve certain goals, thanks to European and American ophthalmologists and, recently, Dr. Kristian Hohla, and his team from Germany, who helped me throughout and are still holding my hand.
