He has also authored more than 200 academic papers and 10 professional books. Today he is professor emeritus at the Catholic University of Korea and chairman of CFER. Dr. Stein earned his medical de- gree from the University of Toronto in 1952 and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 1957. He earned his F.R.C.S. from the Royal College of Surgeons, in Ottawa, Canada. In the 1960s, Dr. Stein founded the first Ophthalmic Assistant Asso- ciation in North America, organized the first course for ophthalmic assis- tants, and co-authored The Oph- thalmic Assistant, a textbook that is now in its ninth edition. By the 1970s, Dr. Stein was a leader in the Contact Lens Association of Oph- thalmologists (CLAO), for which he organized educational programs for residents and technicians. In 1984, he was named the first Canadian president of CLAO. He also has held leadership positions for the Ontario Medical Association, Joint Commis- sion of Allied Health, American Association of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmol- ogy, and the Canadian Ophthalmo- logical Society, among many others. As the longest standing chief of ophthalmology at Scarborough Gen- eral Hospital, Toronto, Dr. Stein has been honored by many professional, municipal, and civic organizations. In 1987, he established the Charita- ble Eye Foundation at the Bochner Eye Institute, where he serves as director. He was the chairman of the Annual Toronto Eye Meetings (1972- 1994), founded the first govern- ment-funded surgical eye center in Canada in 1993, and has authored or co-authored more than 200 scien- tific and educational articles and 37 books, many of which are in multi- ple editions and available in many countries. His humanitarian eyecare efforts have taken him to Haiti, Malta, Peru, Cyprus, and Kenya. "Professor Kim is one of the luminary figures in ophthalmology for his significant contributions to the development of cataract and refractive surgery," said Edward J. Holland, M.D., ASCRS immediate past president and current member of the ASCRS Executive Committee. "As a former head professor of the ophthalmology department at the Catholic Medical College in Seoul, Dr. Kim has been the recipient of many awards and accolades for his outstanding achievements in ophthalmology. Dr. Stein has made many contributions to cornea, contact lenses, cataract and refrac- tive surgery. He was a pioneer in the adoption of intraocular lenses for cataract surgery and among the first in Canada to use them. Dr. Stein was also an innovator in refractive surgery and among the very first surgeons in North America to utilize laser vision correction."
