World view Survive or thrive: Preparing for changes in ophthalmology M anaging a successful ophthalmology practice has never been more chal- lenging. Reimbursement continues to decline while documentation requirements and patient expecta- tions increase. In this issue of EyeWorld, we asked successful ophthalmologists and their practice administrators what they are doing to survive and even thrive in the new healthcare economy. Their responses are a blueprint for what can be done to make your practice more successful. For many, electronic health records (EHR) are a necessary evil imposed on them by the government. However, several enterprising practices are employing EHR to add value to their practices. John Hovanesian, MD, developed MDback- line, which is software that seamlessly follows patients after an office visit or surgery with regular emails to assess satisfaction. It also allows patients to ask questions and have access to information they might have forgotten to ask about during their visit with the ophthalmologist. Kerry Solomon, MD, developed Veracity, which evaluates all of the preoperative data for patients having cataract surgery including biometry, topography, OCT, keratometry, refraction, and subjective patient information. Then with one click of a but- ton, surgical recommendations, OR reports, and informed consent documen- tation are created. Dr. Hovanesian, Vance Thompson, MD, and I share our thoughts on these systems and more. A key to a successful practice is having access to and preferably owner- ship in a quality ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Richard Davis, MD, and his CEO Robert Nelson have recently built one of the largest and most suc- cessful ophthalmic ASCs in the country. They offer great suggestions on how to replicate their accomplishments. Bradley Black, MD, Jerome Levy, MD, and Y. Ralph Chu, MD, are all past presidents of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, an organization that represents ophthalmic ASCs. They also present their wisdom on how to develop a surgicenter. Dry eye disease is the single most common reason patients come to an eye doctor's office and has a profound effect on their quality of vision and quality of life. Marguerite McDonald, MD, Edward Holland, MD, William Trattler, MD, Jennifer Loh, MD, John Sheppard, MD, and Richard Lind- strom, MD, are not only leading researchers and speakers on the subject of dry eye, they also have thriving practices in which dry eye management has been instrumental in their success. They offer pearls for how to bring dry eye efficiently and profitably into a practice. Finally, practice management has never been more important. Navigat- ing the pitfalls that are constantly lurking makes administrators and manag- ing partners crucial to practice success. A great administrator takes leadership in helping to run a successful practice. Laurie Brown, MBA, C. Jolynn Cook, RN, Robert Weinstock, MD, and Candy Simerson, FASOA, manage practices or provide practice consultation. I think their pearls for what to look for and how to bring in new staff and physicians are very insightful. In addition, their leadership suggestions are something every practice needs. I hope you enjoy this issue of EyeWorld, which offers the best from both ASCRS and ASOA.
