Dr. Willoughby is also drawn to
outreach, bringing eye services to
those in some of the Pacific Islands.
Since 1998, Dr. Willoughby has
taken 12 visits to Tonga and seven to
Tuvalu to do cataract surgery. While
he finds this work rewarding, it can
also be challenging.
"One problem is that you can
go all the way to Tuvalu and find
that the machinery is not work-
ing correctly or has been broken
in transit," he said. This can be a
particular challenge when transport-
ing equipment like phaco machines
and microscopes. That is why Dr.
Willoughby would prefer the option
of sailing to the islands, allowing
him to take his equipment and have
a place to stay when he arrives.

Additionally, this could help
with access to the islands. "When I
work in Tuvalu, I go to one island,"
he said. However, with multiple
islands in the area, this could mean
that some people in need of assis-
tance on the outer islands may not
be seen, depending on the weather
or ferry access. "If we were to take
a boat there, we could possibly
manage to see everyone," he said.
Dr. Willoughby most recently spent
2 weeks in August in Tuvalu and 1
week in Tonga. EW
