He has been sailing since 1963, and that's when he fell in love with Kangaroo Island. "When I passed my medical degree and got a special- ist fellowship in ophthalmology in 1979, my first work in private practice was on Kangaroo Island," he said. He participates in yacht races, with much success in recent years. In 2010, Dr. Willoughby and his team won the Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race down the west coast of Tasmania. They have participated in the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race four times, finishing in the top 10–20%. Dr. Willoughby said that his crew of eight (including two ophthalmolo- gists) continues to be competitive, coming close to winning in 2014. Dr. Willoughby continues to work full time at his ophthalmolo- gy practice, with his partner, Joan Nemeth, assisting with the business aspects both at the practice and the winery. "When you work all day doing operations or consulting, you like to do something different for your pastime," he said. J ohn Willoughby, MD, Adelaide, Australia, first started plans for his winery 25 years ago on Kangaroo Island. Since then, it has turned into Bay of Shoals Wines, a sheltered harbor and sailor-friendly spot where visitors can sail up and visit the cellar door to try some of the many varieties of wine offered. In addition, Dr. Willoughby continues his ophthalmology prac- tice at Gawler Eye & Laser Clinic near Adelaide and has an interest in sailing, participating in yacht races. Dr. Willoughby spoke to EyeWorld about ophthalmology, his winery, and sailing, as well as his work bringing eye services to areas in the Pacific Islands. Dr. Willoughby first planted his vines in 1992, with his first harvest 6 years later in 1998. It was in 2006 that he added the winery building and has been making wines onsite ever since. Bay of Shoals Wines offers 14 different types of wines, including Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Savag- nin, Rose, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvi- gnon, Pinot Noir, Island Blend, and Vintage Fortified, along with some sparkling wines. "My winery is the only winery in Australia where you can sail your yacht, row ashore, and walk up to the cellar door," he said.
