UPDATE 13 by Terry Kim, MD, ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee Chair ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee update Over the last 4 decades, ASCRS has continuously valued innovation and guidance from ophthalmic leaders. As a key part of bolstering this effort and the society's mission, ASCRS has established numerous committees that consist of physician leaders who help guide members in clinical specialty areas, education, and government. We are pleased to highlight the tremendous work of the ASCRS Clinical Committees in EyeWorld. This month features the dedicated efforts of the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee. I have had the distinct pleasure and privilege of serving as chair of the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee for the past several years. And it is a bittersweet moment as I move on to the ASCRS Executive Committee and turn the reigns over to my successor, Francis Mah, MD. The Cornea Clinical Committee has served a pivotal role in mak- ing sure up-to-date and clinically relevant cornea content has made its way to the annual ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress, Cornea Day, peer-reviewed publications, ASCRS alerts, special reports, task forces, and other educational programs. I have been fortunate to receive mentorship and leadership from other ASCRS cornea leaders, including Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Ed Holland, MD, Stephen Lane, MD, Dick Lindstrom, MD, and Roger Steinert, MD. I am also indebted to the very talented and illustrious committee members past and pres- ent who have worked hard to follow through on the numerous contribu- tions of this important committee. As an example, we have assembled a list of programs, papers, and projects the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Commit- tee has recently helped to produce. Pterygium—An update on modern surgical techniques paper In an upcoming issue, the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS) will publish a peer-reviewed paper, "Pterygium—An Update on Mod- ern Techniques," led by first author John Hovanesian, MD, along with members of the ASCRS Cornea Clin- ical Committee. Ongoing work on new diagnostics and treatments for dry eye Christopher Starr, MD, is current- ly working with other committee members on real-world utilization of a dry eye algorithm to help guide clinicians on the use of point-of- care diagnostics as well as treatment options for dry eye patients. Once complete, Dr. Starr, along with co-authors and participant physi- cians Marjan Farid, MD, and Preeya Gupta, MD, will be submitting their work for potential publication in JCRS. Another objective to ensure that physicians utilize this algorithm is to create an in-office hard copy and/ or an online tool that is easily acces- sible and applicable. Clinical alert Our committee helped draft the recent joint ASCRS/ESCRS/APACRS/ ALACCSA Clinical Alert on the ocular complications of cosmetic anterior chamber iris implants, which included corneal decompen- sation. This alert called attention to the issue that unregulated cosmetic iris implants were being used outside the U.S. and European Union, caus- ing severe ocular complications in many patients. Crosslinking roundtable discussion Sponsored by the National Kerato- conus Foundation, a Crosslinking Roundtable Discussion was held on Feb. 3, 2017. Dr. Farid and Dr. Mah represented ASCRS during this one-day meeting of clinical experts to help develop patient guidelines, web-based FAQs, and informational brochures that will address some of the common questions patients raise about corneal collagen crosslinking. ASCRS educational webinars The Cornea Clinical Committee conducted a webinar entitled "The Changing World of Dry-Eye Disease Diagnosis and Management" on March 30, 2016. The webinar was moderated by Clara Chan, MD, and panelists included Drs. Mah, Farid, and Gupta. The webinar was well attended and received high ratings and positive feedback. More recently, the committee held a webinar entitled "Clinical Applications of Amniotic Membrane in the Office and Operating Room Setting" on March 29, 2017. The webinar was moderated by Thomas John, MD, and presenters included Elizabeth Yeu, MD, and Neel Desai, MD.
