UPDATE by Denise Monasterio ASCRS Communications Manager Combined Ophthalmic Symposium offers education for your entire practice The 2017 Combined Ophthalmic Symposium will take place August 11–13 in Austin, Texas R egistration is now open for the 2017 Combined Ophthalmic Symposium (COS), sponsored by ASCRS, ASOA, and the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses (ASORN). This annual event is being held August 11–13 at the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas. The program offers educa- tional opportunities for the entire ophthalmic practice, featuring tracks for ophthalmologists, young eye surgeons, practice management staff, optometrists, and nurses and technicians. The format allows COS attendees to maximize their week- end learning experience by provid- ing intensive educational program- ming for everyone involved in the ophthalmic practice. Ophthalmologist Program The 2017 Ophthalmologist Program is aimed at anterior segment sur- geons, comprehensive ophthalmolo- gists, and ophthalmic residents and fellows with an interest in anterior segment care. Topics covered in the program include: • Cataract Surgery: Basics and Beyond • Premium Cataract Surgery • Glaucoma: The Pressure is On! • Expanding the Role of MIGS and Beyond • Oculoplastic Pearls and Perils • Video Session: The Thrill of Victory and Agony of Defeat • Conquering the Cornea • Ocular Surface Disease Debates • Refractive Revivals • New in 2017: The Future of Ophthalmology The Ophthalmologist Pro- gram will be held Saturday, August 12, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 13, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The 2017 program chairs are Douglas Koch, MD, Thomas W. Samuelson, MD, and Sumitra Khandelwal, MD. They are joined by an esteemed faculty who will deliver the quality educational programming for which ASCRS is known. "The 2017 COS has a fantastic, diverse faculty who will share new and highly relevant material geared toward comprehensive ophthalmol- ogists," Dr. Koch said. "We will have time for questions and discussion both in sessions and informally with the faculty. We want attendees to leave with a lot of new information that they can apply immediately in their practices." Young Eye Surgeons Program For residents, fellows, and surgeons in their first five years of practice, the Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Pro- gram begins Friday, August 11, at 9:30 a.m. and features a full-day of skills transfer sessions, general ses- sions, and challenging cases break- out groups. This combination of a hands-on, interactive environment will facilitate the assimilation of key concepts from basic to complex anterior segment surgeries. The general session will be a mix of presentations and challeng- ing cases breakout groups. The skills transfer session will include stations for phaco, limbal relaxing incisions, microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and lens folding. "We are excited to offer another great YES Program this year," said Dr. Khandelwal, co-chair of the YES Program. "We will have a fantastic wet lab as well as breakout discus- sions on complex and challenging cases." ASOA Practice Management Program The Practice Management Program is specifically designed for ophthal- mic administrators and practice management staff. This two-day pro- gram begins on Friday at 8 a.m. with a workshop on "MACRA—What is It and What Does It Mean to My Practice?" presented by Nancey McCann, ASCRS•ASOA director of Government Relations. Friday after- noon features a 4-hour workshop on "Effective Clinic Flow" presented by Adrienne Lloyd, MHA, FACHE, and Heidi Campbell, HCA, both with Duke Eye Center, Durham, North Carolina. The program continues Saturday with courses and panel discussions on the following topics: • 2017 Legislative and Regulatory Update • 2017 Coding & Billing Update • What's Happening in the Insurance World? • Are All Audits Created Equal? Let's Audit the Audits • Business Models for New Technologies • Handling OD Referral Networks Part of the "ASOA on Tour" regional meeting portfolio, COS offers an excellent opportunity for practice administrators and practice management staff to engage in one- on-one dialogue with presenters and network with their colleagues. Optometrist Program The COS Optometrist Program is geared toward optometrists with an interest in anterior segment care who work in an ophthalmic prac- tice. The program chairs are Derek Cunningham, OD, Walter Whitley, OD, MBA, FAAO, and Ahmad Fah- my, OD, FAAO, Dipl ABO. Topics covered in the program include: • New and Emerging Technologies • Glaucoma Updates • Contact Lens Technology • Cornea Controversies • Dry Eye Debates Also, optometrists can attend COS free of charge when an oph- thalmologist from their practice registers for the Ophthalmologist Program. Nurse and Technician Program The Nurse and Technician Program features a day and a half of com- prehensive, interactive education directed toward ophthalmic nurses and health personnel.
