UPDATE 15 by Natalie Zundel ASCRS Foundation Development Director A Dallas practice makes a difference in its own community through Operation Sight ASCRS member volunteers to change lives for the better Dr. Whitman with his first Operation Sight patient. Source: Jeffrey Whitman, MD J effrey Whitman, MD, Dal- las, believes doing good for others is a winning propo- sition. And he lives every day of his life embracing that concept. Dr. Whitman was born in Dal- las, attended Hillcrest High School, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Southern Methodist University. He earned his MD at Southwest- ern Medical School in Dallas and also completed his internship at the same institution. Dr. Whitman completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Scott and White Clinic in Temple, Texas. Now, as president and chief surgeon of the Key-Whitman Eye Center in Dallas, Dr. Whitman leads this award-winning practice with the tagline "Key-Whitman Chang- es Lives." And it is not just about marketing. The Key-Whitman doctors have supported several different programs to improve vision for those in Gua- temala, Belize, and Cuba. "Changing lives for the better is what inspires all of us at Key-Whitman," says Dr. Whitman. Now they are turning their attention to those in need in their own community. Dr. Whitman became an Oper- ation Sight volunteer last year and performed his first volunteer surgery through the ASCRS Foundation pro- gram in December 2016. "Our first patient is a full-time student, but her 20/100 acuities made her studies very difficult. Performing cataract surgery on both eyes over a two-week span will help improve her vision immeasurably and allow her to complete her stud- ies," details Dr. Whitman. Dr. Whitman believes this will be just the first of many local patients he and his practice will be able to help through Operation Sight. When asked what he would tell other surgeons who are con- sidering becoming Operation Sight volunteers, he exclaims, "Just do it!" "Seeing the first smiles on their faces when you tell them you can help, and then seeing their faces light up again when they first read the letters on your wall with the improved vision—that is the most rewarding experience. Everybody wins when we do good for others!" In the spring, the ASCRS Foun- dation will host an informative webinar for those interested in vol- unteering, led by current Operation Sight volunteers.
