May 2012 months. The majority of his patients reported moderate levels of satisfac- tion; for those patients who weren't so satisfied, he identified high ex- pectations prior to surgery and regression of near acuity after as the main causes of dissatisfaction. Halo, glare, and the regression of near visual acuity suggest physicians need a new algorithm for treatment. Meanwhile, patient education is an important component of success with this procedure, Dr. Tchah said. INTRACOR (Bausch + Lomb/ Technolas) is basically SUPRACOR using a femtosecond instead of an excimer laser, according to Robert Ang, M.D., Makati City, Philippines. While SUPRACOR—as Dr. Tchah had also pointed out—is basically a LASIK procedure that uses a presby- opic treatment algorithm, using the femtosecond laser does away with the flap; therefore, said Dr. Ang, SUPRACOR is in comparison a mini- mally invasive procedure with no risk of flap complications. Unfortunately, he said, INTRA- COR has a narrow indication (+0.25 to +1.00 D) and does not allow touch ups. Editors' note: Drs. Ang, Cheng, and Tchah have financial interests with Bausch + Lomb. Cutting IOP with phaco Phaco is effective in reducing IOP, with a mild effect in primary open- angle glaucoma and a significant effect in primary angle-closure glaucoma, said Shan Lin, M.D., San Francisco. Many theories have been pro- posed to explain the IOP-lowering effect of phaco, with some experts suggesting the release of prostaglandins during surgery or the release of cytokines owing to vibra- tion of the trabecular meshwork. Based on his own experience, including a review of OCT images in cases he had performed, Dr. Lin be- lieves the primary mechanism is the simplest: the mechanical opening of the angles resulting from debulking of the capsular space. In any case, said Dr. Lin, this experience and findings have definitely altered his approach to treating patients with high IOP. AIOS gears up for APAO 2013 The All India Ophthalmology Soci- ety (AIOS) is already gearing up to host next year's APAO Congress in Hyderabad. "We want to showcase Indian ophthalmology to the entire world," said Rajvardhan Azad, M.D., New Delhi, India, president of next year's congress. "We want to open Indian ophthalmology to the world—show the world this is our standard. "We will put up our best so that people see what we have in store for them," he said. At next year's meeting, Dr. Azad hopes to make the world aware of the progress they have made particu- larly in the prevention of blindness. "This is very relevant to the en- tire world, not only to India," he EW MEETING REPORTER 61 said. "The blindness prevention pro- gram has been in place for almost 30 years, and the way the program has benefited India is an example for the world. "In 1990, the cataract surgery rate was 0.7-0.8 million per year," he added. "Today the cataract surgery rate is 6-7 million." The program has reduced the burden of cataract from being responsible for 85% to just 62% of blindness in India.
