UPDATE by Denise Monasterio ASCRS Communications Manager was created by ASCRS in 1999 to honor the pioneers of ophthalmolo- gy. In the past 17 years, 57 outstand- ing ophthalmologists have been chosen by their peers for induction. The ASCRS Opening Gener- al Session will close out with the presentation of the Binkhorst Medal to Boris Malyugin, MD, PhD. Since 1975, the Binkhorst Medal has been awarded to the world's most prominent ophthalmologists whose careers have made significant contri- butions to the science and practice of ophthalmology. Dr. Malyugin is a professor of ophthalmology at the European School for Advanced Stud- ies in Ophthalmology and is a board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. ASOA Opening General Session The ASOA Open- ing General Ses- sion will be held on Saturday, May 6. Dan Thurmon, author, entre- preneur, and workplace performance ex- pert, will be the featured presenter. As a renowned keynote speaker, Mr. Thurmon has delivered thousands of presentations worldwide. A recent inductee to the prestigious "Speakers Hall of Fame," Mr. Thurmon delivers experiences that go beyond motivation, teach- ing concepts and skills in a highly engaging and entertaining manner. He empowers audiences to rediscov- er their inner greatness and conquer their self-imposed limitations. ASCRS Sunday Summit General Session The Sunday Summit Gen- eral Session on May 7 will kick off with U.S. astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain Scott Kelly deliver- ing the Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology. Mr. Kelly will present "The Sky is Not the Limit: Lessons from a Year in The meeting will be held May 5–9 in Los Angeles ASCRS•ASOA Joint Government Relations General Session On Friday, May 5, the ASCRS•ASOA Joint Govern- ment Relations General Session will feature Tom Coburn, MD, former Republi- can Senator from Oklahoma. From 1970 to 1978, Dr. Coburn was the manufacturing manager at the Ophthalmic Division of Coburn Optical Industries, Colonial Heights, Virginia, growing the division from 13 employees to more than 350 and capturing 35% of the U.S. market. After the family business was sold, Dr. Coburn returned to school to become a physician, attending the University of Oklahoma Medical School. After graduation, Dr. Coburn returned to his hometown of Muskogee, Oklahoma, in 1983 to practice family medicine, allergy, and obstetrics. He has delivered more than 4,000 babies. From 1995 to 2001, Dr. Coburn represented Oklahoma's 2nd Con- gressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, and was the first Republican to hold that seat for consecutive terms. During his ten- ure, he served on the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommit- tee, played a central role in Medi- care and health care debates, and worked with ASCRS and the Patient General sessions at ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress to feature international experts UPDATE Tom Coburn, MD Dan Thurmon Scott Kelly Space." During his lecture, Mr. Kelly will share lessons on leadership and teamwork, personal stories of perseverance, and the path that led him to secure his place in history. Mr. Kelly's achievements over his 20- year career with NASA earned him the sought-after position as Ameri- ca's first year-round astronaut. Kelman Innovator's Lecture On Monday, May 8, during the Innovators Session, Reay Brown, MD, a distinguished ex- pert in glaucoma and cataract sur- gery, will deliver the prestigious 2017 Charles D. Kelman Innovator's Lecture. Dr. Brown has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles on glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has served as chairman of the ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Commit- tee and is currently the Glaucoma section editor of EyeWorld magazine. ASCRS Best of 2017 General Session The meeting will conclude with the ASCRS Best of 2017 General Session on Tuesday afternoon. This special wrap-up session will highlight some of the most important and interest- ing papers presented at the 2017 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Con- gress, as selected by EyeWorld Edito- rial Board members from among the "Best Paper of Session" winners. He was re-elected in 2010 and retired in 2015, returning full time to his medical practice in Muskogee. ASCRS Opening General Session On Saturday, May 6, the ASCRS Opening General Session will kick off with presentations by Kerry Solomon, MD, ASCRS president, and Bonnie Henderson, MD, incoming president. Dr. Henderson will introduce the 2017 Honored Guests: Luther Fry, MD, and Y.C. Lee, MD. Drs. Fry and Lee will be presented the prestigious award in recog- nition of their significant con- tributions to the advancement of the field of oph- thalmology. Dr. Fry, who has previously been listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America," is in private practice in Garden City, Kansas. He is also a clinical assis- tant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. Specializing in phacoemulsification, Dr. Lee has given 132 presentations on the subject and other related topics through various organizations including ASCRS, the Asia-Pacific As- sociation of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and others. He has served as an instructor of skills transfer courses and wet labs for these organizations. The ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will recognize the chosen inductees.
