there on Thursday for qualifying
races, Friday trials, and Saturday
and Sunday racing and would then
head back to the U.S. for work. He
described it as "pretty intense."
Dr. Dudley's interest in oph-
thalmology first started during the
Vietnam era while he was serving as
a general medical officer in the Air
Force in Goose Bay, Labrador, Can-
ada. "I was drafted as a doctor and
served a couple of years as a general
medical officer," he said. After he
found several ophthalmology cases
that he thought were really interest-
ing, he decided to pursue ophthal-
mology as a career. Dr. Dudley added
that he has a background in physics,
which factored in well with the ad-
vent of numerous laser technologies.
He has been in practice in Wiscon-
sin for almost 40 years now.
Dr. Dudley finds similarities and
differences in his careers in racing
and ophthalmology. "You have to be
very exact and there's no room for
error," he said. But at the same time,
racing can be an outlet, a way to do
something different than ophthal-
mology. EW
