Dr. Dudley's longtime
interest in racing cars
became a reality
F
or Stephen Dudley, MD,
Oshkosh, Wisconsin, his
childhood interest in car
racing eventually turned
into a reality. Dr. Dudley
said that he was always interested
in racing, but it wasn't until his
children had grown up and left
home that he began taking driving
courses. He used that as a spring-
board to start racing himself. This
was a hobby he continued for 25
years, although he no longer races
anymore.
When learning to drive for
racing, it's important to know that
each race organizer and location has
its own standards, Dr. Dudley said.
He added that there is a mentoring
process during training, in which
drivers do a few races with someone
driving in front of or behind them
to make sure they are safe. This
applies to both the North American
and European events that he has
participated in. You have to qualify
and prove yourself, Dr. Dudley said.
Dr. Dudley raced vintage cars
specifically. "There's a whole group
of races set up with the older cars,"
he said. These are cars from the
1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
Dr. Dudley said he would race in
Europe on alternate years. He's been
to each of the big European events—
the Grand Prix of Monaco and the
Le Mans Classic—several times.
The Monaco vintage race,
known as the Monaco Historic
Grand Prix, occurs a couple of weeks
before the well-known Formula 1
race, he said, and it includes cars
that were qualified to race in the
1950s and 1960s as well as pre- and
post-war Grand Prix cars. The cars
race on the same course as the
Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, the Le Mans is
the famous 24-hour race held in
Le Mans, France. It has been going
on annually since 1923. There's a
vintage recreation of the event, the
Le Mans Classic, every other year.
This vintage race takes place in July
and is specifically for cars built prior
to 1979.
In addition to these 2 races,
Dr. Dudley said he would do some
European rallies, which means that
the races have a rally component
to them each day. These events can
go on for about a week and tend
to be endurance events. These are
different from circuit course racing
and can take place on a variety of
surfaces and include race tracks and
hill climbs.
Dr. Dudley has participated in
these types of races for about 25
years. He would alternate between
races in Europe and North America
each year. In addition, he traveled
once to Australia to race.
While he was racing, Dr. Dudley
was still practicing ophthalmology
full time. When attending races, he
would leave for Europe on Wednes-
day night after work in order to get
