EW NEWS & OPINION June 2016 29 Dr. Barry is also known for research that compared femtosec- ond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) to traditional phacoemul- sification cataract surgery. This research concluded that both pro- cedures resulted in equally positive outcomes, but FLACS didn't outpace traditional methods in terms of performance. "Peter was not afraid of con- fronting ophthalmic issues in the context of what he felt was better patient care," Mr. Karcher said. Steve Arshinoff, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology, Uni- versity of Toronto, offered a similar assessment of Dr. Barry's inquisitive character. "He was not a man to take on simple challenges; he wanted to help answer our big questions. I tru- ly enjoyed every mutual challenging discussion we have had and will miss my honorable opponent, but really my partner in our shared goal of reducing infections," Dr. Arshinoff said, referencing Dr. Barry's work on intracameral antibiotics. "We, and our patients, owe him a debt of gratitude. How many of us can say that we have changed the world of ophthalmology? With the ESCRS and studies he led, Peter did." When he wasn't focused on ophthalmic issues, Mr. Karcher said Dr. Barry was a strong competitor on the fairway and putting green. "He and I did play some golf. He's a very competitive individual, which I enjoyed," Mr. Karcher said. "It was competition in the right sort of way. It wasn't nasty or any- thing, but Peter did not like to lose. However, at the 19th hole, things got back to normal with multiple Guinnesses." Dr. Barry was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and in England and was a member of ASCRS, the Irish College of Oph- thalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club, and the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, according to his biography. In addi- tion to his appointment at St. Vin- cent University Hospital, he served as a senior retinal surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and was a senior clinical lecturer at University College Dublin. Dr. Barry is survived by his wife, Carmel, his children, David, Stephen, Simon, and Lisa, and his daughters-in-law, Siobhán and Emer, as well as 2 grandchildren and sev- eral siblings, according to his local obituary. "Peter, with his very structured and strategic mind, was one of the most crucial members of ESCRS," said Oliver Findl, MD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna. "He initi- ated large clinical studies such as the endophthalmitis trial and the FLACS registry. He was also a promoter for getting the younger generation of ESCRS members actively involved in the society. But most of all he was a dear friend to many of us, and I will miss the humorous dinners and drinks with him after long congress days." EW Reference 1. Barry P, et al.
