EW ASCRS PREVIEW 47 from the hub-bub of the meeting to do this. Find a kiosk outside of the busy areas, somewhere you can sit and watch without being inter- rupted," he said. "After Monday night's awards ceremony, all of the videos will be available on the ASCRS website. I highly recommend watching them." This year's panel includes John A. Vukich, M.D., Madison, Wis., as chief judge, Mark H. Blecher, M.D., Philadelphia, Nicole R. Fram, M.D., Los Angeles, Thomas John, M.D., Chicago, Ken Rosenthal, M.D., Great Neck, N.Y., Spencer P. Thornton, M.D., Nashville, Tenn., Liliana Werner, M.D., Ph.D., Salt Lake City, and Amar Agarwal, F.R.C.S., Chennai, India, as the inter- national guest judge. Dr. Fishkind said this year's Fes- tival includes more than 170 entries from around the world, with 35 from the U.S. This year's categories include Cataract Complications, Cataract/Implant Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, In-house Productions, In- struments and Devices/IOLs, New Producer, New Techniques, Quality Teaching, Refractive/Cornea Surgery, and Special Interest. Som Prasad, F.R.C.S.Ed., F.R.C.O.phth., a 2010 winner for his video in the Special Interest cate- gory, Lens Surgery in Marfan Syn- drome, said winning "gave me a sense of achievement. My work on a small number of complex cases has been recognized. Most importantly, when I see patients with subluxed lenses, they have a sense of confi- dence in me managing their condi- tion. Such complex cases usually, but not always, have good results, and prospective patients are reas- sured that they are in good hands, even if the surgery is not straightfor- ward." This year, Dr. Fishkind predicted some of the "hot topics" will be the two videos submitted on femtosec- ond cataract laser surgery, one on an ultrasonic pre-chopper, and one on sulcus-fixated piggyback IOLs. "One video I'm looking for- ward to is from a young woman on phaco pearls. Generally speaking, these videos are a little less artistic than those with more experience, but the category was well received last year." A major modification in 2011 is that three films will be chosen as the "best of the best" of the Festival, Dr. Fishkind said, with one selected for the grand prize. This year's Festival will again feature "outtakes," clips that would not usually be included with the films but show something funny or interesting to the audience. "We will also continue to have awards for 'outrageous outtakes'—those crazy video segments that leave us incred- ulous or hysterically laughing," Dr. Fishkind said. "This truly made the award show funnier and more oph- thalmology-orientated last year." For Dr. Prasad, the Festival is a "great way of demonstrating and sharing surgical innovation and technique. I want to encourage oth- ers to do so. Winning an award is great, but even if you're not a win- ner, we all have some interesting surgical experiences and tips to share, an aspect that is often lost in the more formal paper sessions or symposia. The Film Festival gives us free reign to express and share our ideas." Films may be viewed on de- mand in the computer kiosks throughout the San Diego Conven- tion Center. The Film Festival awards ceremony will open with a wine and cheese reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by the awards at 5:00 p.m. in Hall E of the San Diego Con- vention Center on March 28. Only the winning videos can be viewed on Tuesday, March 29. EW Contact information Fishkind: 520-293-6740, wfishkind@earthlink.net Prasad: +44 151 6047193, sprasad@rcsed.ac.uk
