34 Boston performing arts B o ston is one of the top cities in the world for the performing arts. Here are a few perform- ing art samples in the city during the 2014 ASCRS¥ASOA Symposium & Congress. Music Boston Symphony Orchestra 3 01 Massachusetts Ave. 888-266-1200 www.bso.org The world-famous Boston Sym- p hony Orchestra (BSO) will feature programing at Boston Symphony Hall in late April to close the 2013Ð 2014 season, including a 1:30 p.m. performance on Friday, April 25 and an 8 p.m. performance on Saturday, April 26 of Glinka, Rachmaninoff, and Berlioz. Lorin Maazel will lead the program, which will demon- strate the ÒorchestraÕs stylistically wide-ranging virtuosity,Ó according to its website. Tickets are $31Ð$108 on Friday and $35Ð$130 on Satur- day. On Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m., the ÒCelebrity SeriesÓ will feature Deborah Voigt, soprano, and Brian Zeger, piano. Ms. Voigt will perform a vocal recital of selections by Amy Beach, Richard Strauss, Respighi, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein. Tickets are $30Ð$105. The concert will be free and open to the public. It will take place at the Concert Hall at 855 Commonwealth Ave. The school Òseeks to enhance the presence of cutting-edge musicÓ by promoting new music in the Boston University arts community. Theater American Repertory Theatre 64 Brattle St., Harvard Square 617-547-8300 americanrepertorytheater.org Known as the A.R.T. at Harvard University, the repertory was founded in 1980 and is now known as Òa leading force in the American theater.Ó During the weekend of April 25Ð27, The Shape She Makes will be playing in its world premiere. The story focuses on an 11-year-old girlÕs journey to discover what she inherited from her absent father and neglectful mother, according to the A.R.T. website. The production uses dance and theater to tell the story, which is written and directed by Jonathan Bernstein. Huntington Theatre Company 264 Huntington Ave. 617-266-0800 www.huntingtontheatre.org The Huntington Theatre Company, one of BostonÕs Òbiggest-name companies,Ó will be putting on the new drama Becoming Cuba, by play- wright-in-residence Melina Lopez, from March 28ÐMay 3. The play tells the story of widow Adela, who runs a pharmacy in 1898 Cuba on the eve of the Spanish-American War. But for those who might arrive early to the meeting, the team is playing a game at home against the Yankees on Thursday, April 24 at 7:10 p.m. The Red Sox return home at the end of the meeting: On Tues- day, April 29, the team is playing the Rays at 7:10 p.m., with the series continuing against the Rays until Friday, May 2.
