48 EW AAO PREVIEW October 2013 November 16-19, 2013 AAO annual meeting to feature variety of topics and offerings by Ellen Stodola EyeWorld Staff Writer The Academy prepares for annual meeting with several new features T his year's annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans from November 16 to 19. The Academy expects about 25,000 in attendance at its 117th annual meeting. The meeting will feature hundreds of courses, dozens of symposia, spotlight sessions, posters, free paper sessions, and chances to interact with experts and colleagues. The opening session will kick off on Sunday, Nov. 17 with a welcome, the Jackson Memorial Lecture, an awards ceremony, and a discussion on the IRIS Registry Initiative. The debut of the IRIS Registry will be a big focus of the meeting. AAO is launching it as the nation's first comprehensive eye disease clinical registry. It is one of the most significant projects the Academy has undertaken. "The IRIS Registry will usher in a new era wherein ophthalmologists will have the data to review their own processes and outcomes of care in their continual quest for excellence by generating powerful data in defining the impact and value of the care ophthalmologists provide," according to the Academy. This year's meeting will also feature the relaunch of the Ophthalmic News and Education (ONE) Network following a redesign. Another key feature of the meeting will be the launch of a new video collection geared toward ophthalmologists who treat retinal conditions, titled the "Retina Informed Consent Video Collection." This collection will be a set of 21 five-minute videos that deal with different retinal topics. They are offered in both English and Spanish languages and feature design qualities that make them helpful and easy to understand. The AAO meeting will include several subspecialty days on November 15 and 16. These meetings will focus on cornea, glaucoma, neuroophthalmology, oculofacial plastic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, refractive surgery, and retina. Registrants for these subspecialty days can float between meetings on the days they are registered. There will be sessions recommended for senior ophthalmologists, young ophthalmologists, and an American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE) program. A number of ophthalmologists will be recognized with awards for their contribution to ophthalmol- ogy, including Daniel Albert, MD, this year's recipient of the Laureate Award. Two new named lectures will debut at this year's meeting. The inaugural Michael F. Marmor, MD Lecture in Ophthalmology and the Arts will be presented by Richard Kendall on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 11:30 a.m. His presentation will be titled "Degas, New Orleans and eyes greatly in need of care." The inaugural Bruce E. Spivey, MD Lecture in Risk Management and Patient Safety will be presented this year by Susan Day, MD. It will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. The annual meeting will feature an exhibition of companies and technologies, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 through Monday, Nov. 18, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
