CREATING A TRULY COMPREHENSIVE SUBSPECIALTY SOCIETY 58 | SUPPLEMENT TO EYEWORLD Committees, you see a broad distribution of ethnicities, gender, interests, backgrounds, geographies, and I think that is going to make us a stronger organization." "e members of ASCRS represent the variety of people. … It's not just one type of group," said Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, MD, who first became a member as a resident and has since, through her consistent involve- ment, become chair of the Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Clinical Committee. "I mean that in every sense of the word, academic and private practice, but also subspe- cialties. Another aspect that's important to me is when you look at the leaders, they're also changing in terms of having more diversity in leadership positions … so I think ASCRS is truly so advanced technologically, but also keeping up progressively with the times and hav- ing a good representation of who are our people who are now graduating from residency and going into the workforce." Changes in leadership New leaders, new opportunities ASCRS has also seen a shi in membership demograph- ics and among leadership. Mr. Speares said that many in the Society were excited to see changes with new members and new leaders. Some of the giants of ASCRS and ophthalmolog y remain in- volved in the Society and committed to educating at the Annual Meeting and within other programs. "I give a lot of credit to the leadership group that brought me into ASCRS. ey understood that as much as they enjoyed it and as much fulfillment as they got out of serving in these leadership roles, it was time for them to pass the torch to another generation," he said. "One of the things that's so incredibly important is to make certain everyone understands that meritocracy is how the organization was built. If you look at our Clinical Bylaws updated Amendments to the original ASCRS bylaws were approved by a majority vote at the 2022 ASCRS Annual Meeting. e bylaws cover a host of topics, from mem- bership categories and communication to the makeup and election process for committee ap- pointments. e most significant amendments affected methods of member communications and adjustments to leadership titles, terms, and roles. is included the creation of a Nominat- ing Committee. e committee, chaired by a past president, will widen the scope of nominees for the ASCRS Executive Board. Mr. Speares said the bylaw amendments reflect- ed the leadership's desire for more transparency and democracy in nominations to various posi- tions within the Society, without taking away the importance of meritocracy.
