by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer
Over the last 5 years, the Run for
Sight has helped raise $91,800 for
the ASCRS Foundation's work,
which takes place locally across the
U.S. and abroad in Ethiopia. The
Foundation's Robert Sinskey Eye
Institute in Addis Ababa treated
more than 24,000 patients in 2017,
and its U.S.-based Operation Sight
program will soon deliver its 2,000th
free cataract surgery to an American
in need, Mr. Bell said.

Foundation's charity 5K
will be treated to views of
national landmarks and
monuments
S
pringtime weather and
spectacular views of some
of the nation's most nota-
ble landmarks—what more
could a runner (or walker)
ask for in a race course?
This year, the ASCRS Founda-
tion Run for Sight on April 15 will
take participants along Pennsylva-
nia Avenue in Washington, D.C.
Early-morning runners and walkers
will watch the sun rise over the U.S.
Capitol and see various monuments
along the National Mall, along with
several federal buildings, embassies,
and congressional offices.
Don Bell, director of the ASCRS
Foundation, Fairfax, Virginia, de-
scribed the 5K course as a "fun route
on America's main street."
"In the past, the race has drawn
close to 400 runners," Mr. Bell said.
"We think this is a one-of-a-kind
route that will bring our largest
crowd yet."
The event, which begins at 6:30
a.m., will have pre- and post-race
entertainment, food and drinks,
T-shirts for registrants, medals for all
finishers, and other giveaways. Top
race finishers will be recognized on
the Foundation's website.
Registration for the race is open
online and will be available onsite at
the Walter E. Washington Conven-
tion Center. Bus transportation to
and from the National Mall will be
provided.
With the sponsorship of John-
son & Johnson Vision (Santa Ana,
California), all 2018 race registra-
tions will benefit the Foundation's
humanitarian eye care programs.
