32 March 2018 EW NEWS & OPINION To the point: Simple practice tune-ups for complex times by John B. Pinto and Corinne Wohl, MHSA, COE If you are able to hire a personal assistant to be your "life engineer," here are some possible tasks they could handle. Health oversight manager To a degree that is probably un- comfortable for you to consider, your practice relies on you seeing patients, which also means it relies on your health. This is especially true of small practices. As hard as it is to accept, you are one slip, one accident, one emergency away from practice disaster. And those are just the acute threats. We all know that eating well and exercising is essential to overall health. Skipping out on adequate gym time and proper nutrition is a slow emergency that may slowly erode your practice vitality. Good exercise and nutrition can help you recover from illnesses and injuries quicker, as well as help prevent others. A personal assistant can be a source of external discipline to ensure that you stay fit and lean. Chief experience officer Many people like to have a bucket list of the things they want to be "Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand." —F. Scott Fitzgerald Borrowing a concept from the super rich continued on page 34 O phthalmologists, like so many, have personal goals as well as professional ones. With such busy schedules, it can be hard to balance the various goals, or even make time for them all. Perhaps in the case of time management, the super rich can provide a helpful suggestion. After all, wealthy CEOs are able to suc- cessfully run their companies as well as travel both for business and pleasure. One way successful execu- tives are able to do all they do is by having people work for them who help manage logistics. They may also have assistance in the manage- ment of more personal matters, such as travel arrangements. Like such executives, ophthal- mologists have busy work sched- ules that need to be balanced with personal goals and responsibilities. A possible key to making your life richer is to hire a personal assistant to be the conductor of your life or a personal "life engineer." Such a per- son can be added to your office staff so they can help with work-related travel and logistics as well as more personal details. ACRYSOF ® IQ TORIC IOL IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATION CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this device to the sale by or on the order of a physician. INDICATIONS: The AcrySof ® IQ Toric posterior chamber intraocular lenses are intended for primary implantation in the capsular bag of the eye for visual correction of aphakia and pre-existing corneal astigmatism secondary to removal of a cataractous lens in adult patients with or without presbyopia, who desire improved uncorrected distance vision, reduction of residual refractive cylinder and increased spectacle independence for distance vision. WARNING/PRECAUTION: Careful preoperative evaluation and sound clinical judgment should be used by the surgeon to decide the risk/benefit ratio before implanting a lens in a patient with any of the conditions described in the Directions for Use labeling. Toric IOLs should not be implanted if the posterior capsule is ruptured, if the zonules are damaged, or if a primary posterior capsulotomy is planned. Rotation can reduce astigmatic correction; if necessary lens repositioning should occur as early as possible prior to lens encapsulation. All viscoelastics should be removed from both the anterior and posterior sides of the lens; residual viscoelastics may allow the lens to rotate. Optical theory suggests that high astigmatic patients (i.e. > 2.5 D) may experience spatial distortions. Possible toric IOL related factors may include residual cylindrical error or axis misalignments. Prior to surgery, physicians should provide prospective patients with a copy of the Patient Information Brochure available from Alcon for this product informing them of possible risks and benefits associated with the AcrySof ® IQ Toric Cylinder Power IOLs. Studies have shown that color vision discrimination is not adversely affected in individuals with the AcrySof ® Natural IOL and normal color vision. The effect on vision of the AcrySof ® Natural IOL in subjects with hereditary color vision defects and acquired color vision defects secondary to ocular disease (e.g., glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, chronic uveitis, and other retinal or optic nerve diseases) has not been studied. Do not resterilize; do not store over 45° C; use only sterile irrigating solutions such as BSS ® or BSS PLUS ® Sterile Intraocular Irrigating Solutions. ATTENTION: Reference the Directions for Use labeling for a complete listing of indications, warnings and precautions.* © 2016 Novartis 11/16 US-TOR-16-E-4883 Advancing CATARACT SURGERY AcrySof ® IQ Toric ASTIGMATISM-CORRECTING IOL 98442 US-TOR-16-E-4883_PI EW.indd 1 7/13/17 2:26 PM
