UPDATE by Denise Monasterio ASCRS Marketing and Communications Manager ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame was created by ASCRS in 1999 to honor the pioneers of ophthalmolo- gy. In the past 18 years, 59 outstand- ing ophthalmologists have been chosen for induction by their peers. ASOA general sessions The ASOA Opening General Session will be held on April 14. Christine Cashen, author and world-re- nowned speaker, will be the featured presenter. For more than 20 years, Ms. Cashen has presented to audi- ences throughout the U.S., Canada, South Africa, and Australia. She is an authority on sparking innovative ideas, handling conflict, reducing stress, and energizing employees. In 2014, Ms. Cashen was inducted into the National Speakers Association CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame. Admis- sion into the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame is a lifetime award for speaking excellence and professionalism. New this year is the ASOA Sunday General Session on Sunday, April 15, which will feature author and motivational speaker Joe Mull. Mr. Mull works with healthcare The 2018 ASCRS•ASOA Annual Meeting will be held April 13–17, in Washington, D.C. T he ASCRS Opening Gen- eral Session will feature an address from incoming ASCRS president Thom- as Samuelson, MD. Dr. Samuelson will introduce the 2018 Honored Guests, R. Bruce Wallace, MD, and Richard Packard, MD. Dr. Wallace and Dr. Packard will be pre- sented the prominent award, which honors life-long clinical research or ophthalmic industry experience and accomplishments. Dr. Wallace is the founder and medical director of Wallace Eye Associates, Laser and Surgery Center in Alexandria, Louisiana. He is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Louisiana State University, and an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tulane School of Medicine. Dr. Wallace specializes in anterior segment surgery, microsur- gery, and laser surgery. Dr. Packard is the senior con- sultant of Arnott Eye Associates in Marylebone, U.K. He was senior sur- geon at the renowned Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor, focusing his re- search on cataract and lens surgery. He trained at the Middlesex Hospi- tal, the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, and Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 1981, he published the first description in the medical literature of the use of a folded soft lens in cataract sur- gery. Since then he has continued to teach phaco techniques and is involved in the development of new intraocular lenses, phaco machines, and other instrumentation. He has lectured in 60 countries and is currently involved with the move to laser capsulotomy during cataract surgery. Following the recognition of the ASCRS Honored Guests, Oliver Findl, MD, will be awarded the prestigious Binkhorst Medal. Since 1975, the Binkhorst Medal has been given to the world's most prominent ophthalmologists whose careers have made significant contributions to the science and practice of oph- thalmology. Dr. Findl is a professor of oph- thalmology and chair of the Depart- ment of Ophthalmology at the Ha- nusch Hospital in Vienna, Austria. He founded and heads the Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery. He has authored more than 250 articles in international peer-re- viewed journals and is currently the secretary of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons as well as the treasurer of the Austrian Ophthalmological Society. After the Binkhorst Lecture, David Chang, MD, Stephen Lane, MD, and James Mazzo will give an update on the ASCRS Foundation. The session will close with the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame ceremony, which will recognize the chosen inductees, I. Howard Fine, MD and David Maurice, PhD. The
