Cornea Society News – published quarterly by the Cornea Society 10 Cornea Society announces 2018 awardees contributions to the profession. Claes Dohlman, MD, PhD, the inaugural recipient of the award and for whom it is named, created the first formal corneal fellowship program in the U.S. at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Retina Foundation (now Schep- ens Eye Research Institute) in Boston. Dr. Dohlman has trained hundreds of fellows, many of whom went on to become full professors. His commitment to teaching and education has enabled many of his students to leave their mark on the field of ophthalmology. The Dohlman Award will be presented during the Cornea and Eye Banking Fo- rum in Chicago in October 2018. CN promote knowledge, research and under- standing in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery. The award is named for Ramon Castroviejo, MD, the father of modern corneal transplant surgery and the inspiration for the founding of the Cornea Society. The Castrovie- jo Medal will be presented during the Cornea Society-sponsored symposium during the 2018 AAO annual meeting in Chicago. Ronald Smith, MD, former chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, will be awarded the Dohlman Award posthumously. The Dohlman Award is given to recognize a lifetime of teaching excellence in the field of cornea and external disease and for T he Cornea Society is pleased to announce the awardees for the 2018 Castroviejo Medal and the Dohlman Award. Alan Sugar, MD, professor, University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, and editor of the Cornea journal, has been chosen to receive the 2018 Castroviejo Medal. Each year the Society names the most outstanding individual in the field of cornea and the anterior segment of the eye to receive the Castroviejo Medal and deliver the Castroviejo Lecture at the Society's scientific symposium at the American Academy of Ophthalmol- ogy (AAO) annual meeting. This is the Society's highest award and is given in recognition of exceptional contributions in support of the Society's mission: to I n 2007, Michael Belin, MD, became the Cornea So- ciety's first vice president for international relations. During his 8-year tenure, he was incredibly successful at building and maintaining relationships with numer- ous prominent international organizations with whom we continue to enjoy successful collaborations. Since 2016, Bennie Jeng, MD, has been the vice president for interna- tional relations, and he has continued the effort to nurture our existing partnerships and to build new relationships. As a part of these relationships, the Cornea Society oc- casionally sponsors scientific symposia at various meetings of the international organizations. In 2017, Cornea Society symposia were held at the following meetings: • Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) meeting in Singapore (March): "Keratoconus and ectasias: etiolo- gy, diagnosis, and management." Cornea Society speakers included Michael Belin, MD, Bennie Jeng, MD, Marian Macsai, MD, Gerard Sutton, MD, Akilesh Gokul, MD, Jodhbir Mehta, MD, and Charles McGhee, MD. • Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthal- mologists (RANZCO) branch meeting, Bay of Islands, New Zealand (May): Marian Macsai, MD, represented the Cornea Society as a keynote speaker. • European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) meeting, Barcelona, Spain (June): "Managing inflammatory con- ditions of the ocular surface." Cornea Society speakers included Marian Macsai, MD, Kathy Colby, MD, PhD, Esen Akpek, MD, Luigi Fontana, MD, and Shahzad Mian, MD. • Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology (PAAO) meet- ing, Lima, Peru (August): "Decision-making for corneal disorders." Cornea Society speakers included Michael Belin, MD, Bennie Jeng, MD, Eduardo Alfonso, MD, Elmer Tu, MD, and Barry Lee, MD. • Sektion DOG – Kornea (German Ophthalmologic Society) meeting, Berlin, Germany (October): "Innovative con- servative and microsurgical approaches to treat various types of corneal dystrophies." Cornea Society speakers included Shahzad Mian, MD, Kathy Colby, MD, PhD, Bennie Jeng, MD, Sanjay Patel, MD, and Michael Belin, MD. • Keracon (Cornea Society of India) meeting, Hyderabad, India (December): "Cornea (surgical) complications: identification and management." Cornea Society speak- ers included Michael Belin, MD, Vincenzo Sarnicola, MD, Marian Macsai, MD, Mark Mannis, MD, Audrey Talley Rostov, MD, Luigi Fontana, MD, and Bennie Jeng, MD. As we look forward to 2018, we are expecting to de- velop a few more new partnerships to add to our current collaborations. CN International relations report
