EW MEETING REPORTER 122 September 2017 Reporting from the Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium, August 10–13, San Diego Study (AREDS), large drusen, those 125 µm or greater, are indicative of intermediate AMD/category 3. Geographic atrophy at this stage does not involve the center fovea. Advanced or late-stage AMD, how- ever, does involve the fovea and/or features indicative of neovascular AMD. Another classification system— the Beckman Initiative—also de- scribes intermediate AMD as having at least one large drusen of 125 µm or more and/or AMD pigmentary abnormalities. Dr. Payne briefly mentioned some of the potential treatment areas for dry AMD and geographic atrophy, but Shlomit Schaal, MD, among Caucasians in the U.S., said Shorye Payne, MD, Louisville, Kentucky. There is no FDA-approved treatment for geographic atrophy— the advanced form of AMD, which can develop from various factors including oxidative stress, genetics, and environmental factors—but there is movement on the therapeu- tic front as well as changes in classi- fication of this disease that could be useful as possible treatments become available. When it comes to classification of AMD, drusen—the lipid and pro- tein debris that are the first clinical features of the disease—size matters. Based on the classification that came out of the Age-Related Eye Disease T he Women in Ophthal- mology (WIO) Summer Symposium drew record attendance with more than 300 attendees, according to Program Chair Lisa Nijm, MD, Warrenville, Illinois. A look at the epidemiology, classification, and future of AMD and geographic atrophy A CME-approved activity about geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), specifically focused on the classification and treatment, kicked off the programming.
