the world from the station's website
at www.whyr.org. He's had dedicated
fans who listen and have called in
from as far away as England and the
United Arab Emirates.
The 1-hour show features tra-
ditional blues, country, gospel, and
folk, or what Dr. Williamson calls
"gut bucket music." He said it has
a "traditional old-time feel," and
the show concentrates on pre-1975
records, which he thinks are more
traditional. Each show has a theme
and talks about the individual artists
who are being played. "That way
it becomes more like an informa-
tional evening program rather than
just playing music for an hour," Dr.
Williamson said. He has found that
people like to hear about the back-
stories of songs.
Dr. Williamson has been doing
the show for about a year now
and finds it is a welcome outlet on
Wednesday evenings after a full
day of surgery. "I intentionally
positioned it on Wednesday night
because Wednesday is my surgery
day. I'll have 20–30 cataract surgeries
in the morning, then I'll take lunch
before working on my consulting
and teaching responsibilities in
the afternoon," he said. "I think
it's healthy for busy surgeons to
have an outlet, and I wanted to do
something creative. For me, being
in the studio is my wind down, and
it's nice knowing that I have that to
look forward to in the evening." In
preparation for each week's episode,
Dr. Williamson spends 4–5 hours
doing research for the show. All of
his time is volunteered.
"It's fun to entertain people,"
he said, adding that he's active on
social media with the show, and
many fans write or call in to com-
ment. When reps and industry
colleagues visit Williamson Eye, they
often choose Wednesday so they can
visit the studio at night. Since Dr.
Williamson's radio show launched
on WHYR, that hour has become
one of the most popular segments at
the station. It has more streams than
any other show and has more than
three times the number of listeners
the show had before he took over.
"It's all about community ra-
dio," Dr. Williamson said. "It turns
more people onto the fact that we
don't just have to listen to our sat-
ellites or iPods. We all want to give
back, and for us, this is a fun way to
