EW NEWS & OPINION August 2017 19 Steinert Refractive Lecture videos standing at the bar and I got served a Steinert by Roger Steinert." Such was his impact. Dr. Lane said he has fond memories of sitting on the ASCRS Governing Board and Executive Committee with Dr. Steinert. "He and I were occasionally dis- ruptive at the meetings to the point that I think that some of the folks … would have liked to separate us to control the meeting a bit better, but, of course, we would not let that happen," Dr. Lane said. Dr. Lane called Dr. Steinert's death "a tremendous loss to our pro- fession, not just for those of us who were close friends." "The most beloved man in ophthalmology" In addition to "unequaled" contri- butions to the field of ophthalmol- ogy, Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Oph- thalmic Consultants of Long Island, Rockville Centre, New York, said Dr. Steinert leaves behind a legacy of friendship. "Roger Steinert was the most beloved man in ophthalmology," Dr. Donnenfeld said. "Certainly, there are a lot of very intelligent people, there are a lot of very successful people, but Roger had the entire package of being successful, making contributions to the field, and being liked by everyone. He never burnt a bridge. For Roger, it was all about the personal relationships that made him special." Dr. Steinert was the first one at every meeting, ready to go, and the "linchpin of any academic conver- sation," Dr. Donnenfeld said. But he was also the one sitting at the bar late at night having a conversation and quiet drink with friends. "Roger was a lot of fun to be around, whether it was swimming in Hawaii or drinking Steinerts. Once we had a particularly busy and in some ways contentious meeting, and at the end of the meeting Roger said, 'I think we all need a drink' and pulled out a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, which is one of the best bourbons in the world," Dr. Donnenfeld recalled. As for his professional contri- butions, Dr. Donnenfeld said Dr. Steinert was involved in "anything anterior segment that we now view as crucial."
