UPDATE by ASCRS•ASOA staff New ASCRS educational program for Young Eye Surgeons holds successful dinners A total of 63 physicians attended the YES Educational Dinner Program earlier this year. In 2018, the program will focus on the Midwest region. Source: ASCRS A new specialized program for Young Eye Surgeons (YES) members, the YES Educational Dinner Pro- gram, held dinners this year in Boston, Detroit, and Miami, with 2018 focusing on the Midwest region. A total of 63 physicians attend- ed the dinners this year. The events are free for residents, fellows, and surgeons in their first 5 years of practice. This year's dinners were held in Boston on March 28, Detroit on March 30, and Miami on April 6. The YES Educational Dinner Program was created to provide tar- geted, small group education and to facilitate real conversations on the topics. The goal of this series is to assess current practices for improve- ments to protocol and technique in the management of astigmatism during cataract surgery and integrate necessary updates. Elizabeth Yeu, MD, chair, Young Eye Surgeons Clinical Com- mittee, created the program so that each location had different faculty but received the same presentation. Each location was moderated by a YES Clinical Committee member with ASCRS leadership as faculty, ensuring YES members have access to both. This year's dinners focused on Astigmatism Management, a topic that was selected from ASCRS Clin- ical Survey responses. The dinner program was divided into four parts: • Preoperative evaluation looked at identifying true astigmatism versus other causes of astigma- tism, such as dry eye disease, and discussed the importance of diagnostics in dry eye disease in refractive cataract surgery. A case presentation, small group discus- sion, and a wrap up/review of key takeaway points rounded out this section. • Intraoperative techniques looked at intraoperative technique options for astigmatism manage- ment. Case presentations, small group discussion, and a wrap up/ review of key takeaway points rounded out this section. • Postoperative management looked at postoperative surprise results, the impact of ocular sur- face disease in the postoperative patient, and medication regimen. Case presentations, small group discussion, and a wrap up/review of key takeaway points also round- ed out this section. • Patient counseling offered case presentations on how to counsel patients regarding options along with a small group discussion and wrap up/review of key takeaway points. The dinners are interactive and a great place to ask questions of the faculty members. The next YES Educational Dinner Program events in 2018 will focus on the Midwest region, with the program making its way across the U.S. next year. Join the expert program faculty and other young surgeons by registering for one of the upcoming dinner programs. Detailed information can be found at YESDinner.ASCRS.org.
