ASOA Opening General Session inspires audience to live a life "off balance—on purpose" "Los Angeles is where it all began," said Laureen Rowland, CAE, Fair- fax, Virginia, welcoming attendees to the ASOA Opening General Ses- sion, referencing where the idea for the organization began more than 30 years ago. "Here we are many years later," Ms. Rowland continued, adding that over the years ASOA has and will continue to grow and adapt with its members and alongside ASCRS, which she said, "continues to be a strong advocate of ASOA." ASOA President William Koch, COE, Dallas, also highlighted the close relationship between ASCRS and ASOA. including the TOPGUN sympo- sium, East Meets West session, and a FLACS symposium. Outgoing ASCRS President Kerry Solomon, MD, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, spoke, followed by Incoming ASCRS President Bonnie Henderson, MD, Boston. During the past year, there have been a number of accomplishments, Dr. Solomon said. A record number of members got involved—1,778, which is more than a fifth of ASCRS members. As a result of that, the society has established many new initiatives and accomplished a great deal, he said. Operation Sight has helped to restore sight in more than 1,000 needy Americans, with more than 325 people stepping up to volunteer. "When we come together the way we did this past year, we can accomplish some great things," he said. Dr. Henderson began by saying that she was "deeply humbled to lead what I think is the best organi- zation in ophthalmology." ASCRS was founded by a handful of brave pioneers and led by a number of innovators, she said. All of these people have shaped the society to become what it is today. Dr. Henderson said she thinks ASCRS provides the best education for anterior segment surgeons world- wide. She wants to build on what When you perform cataract surgery first, she said there are a number of advantages. Intraoper- atively, you can perform the cata- ract in a normal fashion. Postoperatively, Dr. Daluvoy said that there is no special positioning required and no risk of graft detachment. The patient may be happy with his or her vision as well, she said. Meanwhile, some patients may only need an EK procedure. Intraop- eratively, there is less pupil manage- ment required and less likelihood of leaky paracentesis incisions. Postoperatively, there is lower risk of graft dislocation and low risk for subsequent CE. Additionally, a clear cornea and known refractive error can help ensure more accurate IOL choices. ASCRS meeting kicks off with Opening General Session Attendees were welcomed to the 2017 ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress by Program Chair Edward Holland, MD, Cincinnati. He said this year's meeting looks to be "one of the best meetings ever," with more than 7,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. Dr. Holland noted that this year's meet- ing is celebrating the return to Los Angeles, where it hasn't been since 1990. Los Angeles was the site of nine of the first 15 ASCRS meetings. Also this year is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of phaco, the "innovative technology that revo- lutionized cataract surgery world- wide," he said. At the meeting, there are more than 1,500 papers, posters, cours- es, symposia, and Skills Transfer sessions, as well as the annual Film Festival, Dr. Holland said.
