At the conclusion of their residencies, they both found jobs at Vistar Eye Center in Roanoke, where they first fell in love. "We are 6 months into our careers now as comprehensive ophthalmolo- gists and are feeling right at home in Virginia. Every Sunday evening that we spend together, rather than on an airplane back to our separate cities, is a reminder of how lucky we are and how far we've come," Will says. "By the time we had to rank our internship programs, we had decided we'd try to do the first year together just for fun. We were lucky enough to land together in Roanoke, Virginia, where we enjoyed a year in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains and fell in love. We married in April of our intern year, with a chasm of 3 years of compelled separation looming ahead," Will explained. Spending the first 3 years of their marriage apart was not easy. "Before living apart, we sought advice from others who had been in similar situations. We heard some cautionary tales of the kind of toll living apart can put on a relation- ship. This certainly brought some apprehension while considering the upcoming 3 years. Turns out, living apart from your spouse truly is hard. However, at the end of the day, we feel lucky since it was hard because we missed each other, not because of strain on our relationship," Karli said.
