EW ASCRS•ASOA 2017 48 ASCRS•ASOA Program Preview • May 5–9, 2017 by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer From diagnostics to medications to MIGS, Glaucoma Day covers it all A SCRS Glaucoma Day will give glaucoma special- ists and comprehensive ophthalmologists alike an in-depth look at the latest in diagnostics, medical therapy, and surgical options to treat patients with this disease. The joint ASCRS and American Glaucoma Society symposium on May 5 will kick off the day with spe- cial considerations for phacoemul- sification in primary open-angle glaucoma patients. This symposium will cover preoperative planning, in- traoperative surgical modifications, premium lenses, IOP management after phaco alone, microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and fem- tosecond laser cataract surgery. Next, a panel will discuss practical technology for the modern ophthalmologist. The panel will go through a few different cases to discuss how to detect progression, followed by discussion of OCT angi- ography, pattern electroretinogram anterior segment OCT, and aqueous angiography. Finally, lessons learned from neuroophthalmology will be covered. International guest speaker Keith Barton, MD, London, United Kingdom, will speak about "MIGS… for a Few Dollars More," from 10:50– 11:05 a.m. Enhancing glaucoma care with medications in lasers will be featured during the subspecialty day with pearls for optimizing topical medi- cations and improving compliances, and an overview of the various types of laser procedures, including laser trabeculoplasty and cyclophotocoag- ulation. Marlene R. Moster, MD, Philadelphia, will present the 2017 Stephen A. Obstbaum, MD, Honored Lecture on "The Holy Grail: Mon- itoring IOP 24/7" from 1:00–1:35 p.m. Following this lecture, various surgical options and pearls will be presented, including trabecular micro-bypass, supraciliary micro-by- pass, gonioscopy assisted translumi- nal trabeculotomy/ab-interno trabe- culectomy, ab-interno canaloplasty, and 360° goniotomy and using a trabecular meshwork excision blade. Several case questions will be presented as well as a discussion of MIGS in the pipeline and complica- tion management. From 3:35–3:55 p.m., Iqbal "Ike" Ahmed, MD, Toronto, Can- ada, and Douglas Rhee, MD, chair of the ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee, Cleveland, will debate the pros and cons of target IOP and whether every patient should be less than 13 mm Hg. Then, con- cluding the day, a highly-interactive session will feature complication management videos competing for the "Reay of Hope" award for "best worst" complication. Attendees registering for either ASCRS Refractive Day, Cornea Day, or Glaucoma Day will be able to cross over into the other subspecial- ty days' offerings, allowing delegates to pick and choose sessions that best fit their practice needs. There will also be a joint exhibit hall for the subspecialty days, prior to the open- ing of the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress Exhibit Hall, giving attendees a chance to learn about companies, products, and services during breaks between sessions. Glaucoma Day attendees have the opportunity to earn seven AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for continuing medical education.
