Contact information: Kliman: gkliman@interwest.com Summit will take place on the Thursday before the annual meeting T he Ophthalmology Inno- vation Summit (OIS) is back again ahead of the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. This year, it will be held at the Sheraton Grand Los Angeles on Thursday, May 4. Gilbert Kliman, MD, Menlo Park, Cali- fornia, one of the chairmen of the meeting, spoke to EyeWorld about what can be expected at this year's OIS@ASCRS. It's a similar format to last year, he said. "We'll be opening up with some breakfast breakout sessions, which have been getting more and more popular." The six topics for the breakfast breakout sessions will be dry eye, glaucoma, presbyopia, refractive correction, microinvasive glaucoma surgery, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Kliman will also present the update overview of innovation and financing in ophthalmology. The meeting will feature two company showcase sessions, and Dr. Kliman said that many companies expressed interest in being involved in this year's meeting. He expects around 20 companies will be show- cased in these sessions. This year's OIS Innovator Award will be presented to Oculeve (now a part of Allergan, Dublin, Ireland) and Michael Ackermann, PhD, San Francisco, who is Oculeve's former CEO, will be given the award at OIS. The afternoon sessions will fea- ture several panel discussions on the program, including one discussing the role of the "mega practice," Dr. Kliman said. Richard Lindstrom, MD, Minneapolis, will lead this pan- el discussion, which will look at the consolidation of practices and what that means for the industry. For practice management companies, Dr. Kliman said, this might seem like déjà vu from the late 1990s, as there seems to be a similar trend. Wrapping up the meeting will be the popular "Masters of the Industry" panel, which will be moderated by William Link, PhD, San Francisco, another chairman of the meeting. Another topic to be discussed will be treatment options for low myopia, moderated by Dr. Kliman and Ste- phen Slade, MD, Houston. The organizers are expecting around 500 attendees, and Dr. Kli- man estimated that this would likely comprise of about one-third start-up and emerging growth companies, one-third corporate executives, and one-third physicians and industry leaders.
