EW ASCRS•ASOA 2017 58 ASCRS•ASOA Program Preview • May 5–9, 2017 and hardware as well as imaging technique and data interpretation. The course aims to give attendees a background in anterior imaging modalities and how AS-OCT images are clinically useful. Faculty for this intermediate-level course are Sarah Armstrong, CRA, OCT-C, FOPS, and Kenneth L. Cohen, MD, both of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This year, there were more than 200 submissions for the OPS/ ASCRS•ASOA Photographic Exhibit from which 50 were selected for recognition. Attendees will be able to view this intersection of medicine and art in the exhibit hall across from the ASCRS Gateway booth. First-, second-, and third-place images and an honorable mention were chosen in each category, which included: • Clinical setting photography • Composite • Corneal endothelial photography • Cross categories • External photography • Fluorescein angiography • Fundus photography, high magni- fication, 20° • Fundus photography, normal, 30°– 40° • Fundus photography, wide angle, 45° • Gonio photography • Gross specimen photography • ICG (indocyanine green) angiogram • Instrumentation photography • Monochromatic photography • OCT • Photo/electron micrography • Slit lamp photography • Special effects photography • Surgical photography • The eye as art • Ultra-widefield imaging An overall Best in Show image was also selected. OPS Chief Judge Jay Rostvold, Rochester, Minnesota, said the Best in Show image titled "Corneal Microcysts," taken by Mike Arango, National Eye Insti- tute, Bethesda, Maryland, shows the same pathology taken at a photo slit lamp but with four different lighting techniques. "I feel that images can be viewed by anyone for their natural beauty, however, someone with an ophthalmic background will see them differently," Mr. Rostvold said, advising attendees to soak in images at the exhibit. "Take a few minutes when you are not rushed and wander through the exhibit, spending more time on the images that interest you." Award-winning submissions are images free of defects taken with good lighting techniques and interesting pathology, Mr. Rostvold said. Winning photographs, in addition to being exhibited at the meeting, will be published in the Journal of Ophthalmic Photography. In addition to Mr. Rostvold, other judges included Lori Snyder, MD, Gainesville, Virginia, James Strong, Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Dennis Cain, Baltimore. On the whole, the images ob- tained by ophthalmic photographers help provide ophthalmologists with information for diagnostics and more. "By taking photographs of a lesion the photographer is docu- menting both the size and shape for follow-up purposes. Diagnostic tests, such as fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, and OCT, all help the ophthalmologists with diagnosing eye disorders," Mr. Rostvold said.
