EW NEWS & OPINION 26 March 2017 increased member participation in our online discussion forums and to ensure that they remain fair and balanced for all. If you have not visited the EyeConnect forum, you are missing out on the day's best and most current discussions. And let's not forget the clinical commit- tees, whose members work closely with staff to disseminate timely and relevant information to members and also plan an array of education- al programming, all with the goal of improving patient care. The majority of the ASCRS lead- ership, including the society's last 10 presidents, comes from private clinical practice. We are real-world ophthalmologists practicing in the same trenches as the rest of our members. We are no different in our concerns and are all tired of the regulations associated with today's medicine. For this reason, ASCRS is working diligently to support the politicians and policies that follow the basic principles embraced by the ASCRS leadership and recently verbalized in a January 22 message to the membership from ASCRS President Kerry Solomon, MD, and Dr. Bakewell. They wrote: "There are a few key principles that ASCRS firmly believes are at the core of our advocacy. These include: • Decreasing the regulatory burden placed upon physicians • Preserving the 'fee for service' and the free market • Supporting a patient's right to choose the doctor of their choice • Preserving the sanctity of the doc- tor-patient relationship • Medical liability reform • The Medicare Patient Empower- ment Act (introduced by Rep. Tom Price, MD) that would allow any Medicare beneficiary to enter into a private contract with a Medicare participating physician for any Medicare covered service. This would allow the contracting phy- sician to opt-out of Medicare on a case-by-case basis, but the bene- ficiary would maintain his or her Medicare benefit as partial pay- ment for the contracted service." Enjoy this issue of EyeWorld, and I will look forward to seeing many of you at our annual meeting this May in Los Angeles. In the meantime, if someone asks you, "What has ASCRS done for you lately?" you can answer, "Plenty."
