44 EW ASCRS PREVIEW March 2012 April 20-24, 2012 Symposium promises to take it "to the max" by Jena Passut EyeWorld Staff Writer X -Rounds at the ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress always promises to be entertaining and in- formative, and this year is no differ- ent, according to one enthusiastic panelist. "X-Rounds is an annual high- light of the ASCRS meeting in which leading refractive cataract surgeons discuss the innovations and ad- vances that have taken place over the previous years and discuss ways to improve refractive outcomes for all surgeons interested in optimizing the outcomes of their refractive cataract surgical patients," said Eric D. Donnenfeld, M.D., co-chairman, Cornea, Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow, N.Y. The 2012 symposium, "X- Rounds: Refractive Cataract Surgery to the Max," will be held from 10- 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, at McCormick Place in Chicago, the site of the Annual Meeting. "It's a chance to hear from the surgeons who have access to the new technologies and to hear about the new advances that are being brought into their practices, as well as new technologies that are being developed that will be available in the near future," Dr. Donnenfeld said. X-Rounds is also a chance for surgeons to discuss the management of difficult cases and how to resolve and prevent problems in the operat- ing room. The panel of distinguished sur- geons includes Dr. Donnenfeld, Kerry D. Solomon, M.D., director, Carolina Eyecare Research Institute, Carolina Eyecare Physicians, Charleston, S.C.; David F. Chang, M.D., clinical professor of ophthal- mology, University of California, San Francisco, and in private prac- tice, Los Altos, Calif.; Steven J. Dell, M.D., director of refractive and corneal surgery, Texan Eye, Austin, Texas, and medical direc- tor, Dell Laser Consultants, Austin; Stephen S. Lane, M.D., clinical pro- fessor of ophthalmology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Richard L. Lindstrom, M.D., adjunct profes- sor emeritus, ophthalmology depart- ment, University of Minnesota, and founder, Minnesota Eye Consult- ants, Minneapolis; Steven G. Slade, M.D., Slade & Baker Vision Center, Houston; and Roger F. Steinert, M.D., professor of ophthalmology, Panelists participate during the 2011 X-Rounds symposium, from left to right: Drs. The fast-paced, action-packed session will present the panelists with six topics, of which they each get 2 minutes to respond. 1. What am I doing differently this year? 2. What are some new technolo- gies on the horizon? 3. Share some complications management videos. 4. Give pearls for cataract surgery following previous LASIK. 5. Talk about how to implement femtosecond-assisted cataract surgery into a practice. 6. Complications management —share your best save of the year. The session becomes interactive when the audience votes on their favorite responses via keypads. "It's a very interactive session, with a lot of give-and-take and a lot of discussion," Dr. Donnenfeld promised. He said he is especially excited to hear about what top surgeons are doing this year compared to in years past and pointed out that 2 years ago, X-Rounds panel members dis- cussed femtosecond technology for cataract surgery, well before the news hit mainstream ophthalmol- ogy. "That is always one of the high- lights for me," Dr. Donnenfeld said. "I like to hear what the other sur- geons are doing differently this year. They tell me what I should be doing. I want to know what I should be get- ting ready for." EW Editors' note: Dr. Donnenfeld has no fi- nancial interests related to this article.
