In the years following, Dr. Wesson has been there for them all, from Boston Har- bor to the French Quarter of New Orleans. Along the way, he and his fellow participants have raised more Highlighting a physician who has run in the ASCRS 5K since it began in 2013 F or the last 4 years, Matthew Wesson, MD, Tupelo, Missis- sippi, has woken up very early on the Sunday morn- ing of the ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. Before the sun is up, rain or shine, Dr. Wesson laces up his running shoes and heads out to do something good for his health, and for those in need. Dr. Wesson has run all four of the Run for Sight races to benefit the ASCRS Foundation. He was there to cross the finish line at the inaugu- ral race in 2013 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. He will be there to cross the finish line on May 7 in Los Angeles at the 5th annual ASCRS Foundation Run for Sight, co-spon- sored by TearLab (San Diego) and Shire (Lexington, Massachusetts). He learned about the first race from an EyeWorld article on the Run for Sight celebrates 5 years in 2017 This column provides ongoing insight into the work of the ASCRS Foundation, whose mission is to provide humanitarian eyecare to those in need, in the U.S. and internationally, as well as to promote physician education and fund innovative research. The ASCRS Foundation accomplishes this through the generosity of ASCRS members, industry partners, and those who share its passion for restoring sight. Insightful news from the ASCRS Foundation Dr. Wesson running a race Source (all): ASCRS Foundation Dr. Wesson finishes his first 5K in San Francisco. Finish line at the 4th annual 5K in New Orleans than $81,000 to benefit the Founda- tion's ongoing, global humanitarian eyecare programs. An avid runner in his 20s and 30s, Dr. Wesson began running again in 2011 following a three-de- cade hiatus. He is now 71 years old, and in addition to the Run for Sight 5K, he enjoys 10K races and has completed a few sprint triathlons. "To me, the 5K race is one of the highlights of the annual meet- ing," Dr. Wesson said. "It's early in the morning, but is well worth the effort. If there is any way you can make the race, do it. It is a memora- ble experience." Even if you are not a runner, you can still join Dr. Wesson and help the Foundation give sight by participating in the 1K walk portion of the event. This year's Run for Sight will start and finish at the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the 2017 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress. Bus transportation to and from area hotels will be provided for ASCRS attendees, and all partici- pants will receive a race t-shirt with their $35 registration.
