29 EW REFRACTIVE January 2017 Contact information Donnenfeld: ericdonnenfeld@gmail.com Thompson: vance.thompson@vancethompsonvision.com "I love to approach the practice of refractive surgery with those prin- ciples in mind and hold new pro- cedures and advancements to those standards," Dr. Thompson said. Topics that readers can expect to learn about under Dr. Thompson's leadership of the section include un- derstanding refraction and refractive error, higher order aberrations and topographic irregularities; diagnos- tics to assess optical quality of the tear film, cornea, and lens; whether or not a multifocal implant can be safely used on a patient; which procedure is best for which patients; and when to do an enhancement. Bringing this information to his colleagues in a news publication like EyeWorld, Dr. Thompson said, is a complement and balance to tradi- tional journal articles. "The pace and energy that a publication like EyeWorld brings makes it feel like a big responsibility to what we're doing to influence the practice of medicine and patient care, but also an exciting oppor- tunity to help our profession," Dr. Thompson said. Outside of ophthalmology, Dr. Thompson and Jana, his wife of 33 years, have raised their three children in South Dakota, taking advantage of the outdoor activities his home state has to offer, includ- ing hunting, fishing, and hiking. Dr. Thompson has also co-owned a California vineyard, Jessup Cellars, for the last 15 years. "With a passion for the patient experience, it has been amazing how those principles have helped the wine business, and a passion for hospitality in the wine business, how those principles have helped in my practice. It's been amazing how ophthalmology has been the single largest impact on my wine journey," Dr. Thompson said. Dr. Thompson has published more than a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, holds multiple pat- ents, and is co-editor of the textbook Refractive Surgery. Dr. Donnenfeld said he looks forward to Dr. Thompson leading the Refractive Editorial Board. "Anyone who knows Vance is a better person for having spent time with him, and now our readership will have that op- portunity in every issue of EyeWorld," Dr. Donnenfeld said.
