World view International perspectives on current trends T here are many techniques and technolo- gies in use and development in ophthal- mology around the world. One place to share observations and results about these is at international meetings. The 2016 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) annual meeting in Copenhagen offered many symposia, paper sessions, and courses, with presenters sharing insights on a variety of topics across subspecial- ties. This month's issue of EyeWorld delves into a few of the big topics from the meeting. These are just a few of the conversations from Copenhagen well worth continuing. Physicians use a number of tactics to avoid complications in cataract surgery. One example is the grooved, capsulorhexis-centered IOL. This can help reduce the risk of posterior capsular opacification and other complica- tions. Marie-José Tassignon, MD, PhD, shares her concept of the bag-in-the- lens IOL, how it works, and how it helps reduce PCO. Samuel Masket, MD, shares his insights on how negative dysphotopsias can be reduced. Creating a good capsulotomy is extremely important in the cataract procedure, and a number of alternative approaches are becoming popular in the ophthalmic community. David Chang, MD, discusses the ZEPTO Preci- sion Pulse Capsulotomy, which uses nanopulse technology to facilitate easy creation of a capsulotomy for less cost than a large laser. The CAPSULaser is another potential tool for capsulotomy creation and is used in conjunction with the surgeon's microscope. Pavel Stodulka, MD, PhD, and Richard Packard, MD, discuss this technology and how it can best be used. It will be interesting to see how novel capsulotomy technology with dedicated capsu- lotomy supported IOL optics will enhance optical quality and result in better outcomes for patients. There are a number of endothelial keratoplasty (EK) techniques avail- able, and surgeons may choose different ones depending on personal pref- erence or what type of patient they are treating. Luigi Fontana, MD, Rudy Nuijts, MD, PhD, Sadeer Hannush, MD, and Donald Tan, MD, discuss their preferred EK procedures, highlighting arguments for DMEK vs. DSEK/DSAEK and in which cases a certain technique is preferred over others. Lasers for phacoemulsification have been around for quite some time. One of these is the nanosecond technology for emulsifying the lens. Jérôme Vryghem, MD, Ivan Tanev, PhD, and A. John Kanellopoulos, MD, discuss their experiences using the nanolaser. We will only see which of these innovative products and novel tech- niques is here to stay with time. But isn't this what makes ophthalmology so exciting?
