teven Vale, MD, Acuity

Scranton, Pennsylvania,
was an active swimmer in
his youth and remained fit
even through medical school and as
an intern. Into residency and after
he got married, however, his exer-
cising became less and less. When
he became a father, he said he was a
couch potato.
By the time he started his career
at Fort Worth Eye Associates in
Texas, Dr. Vale realized, following
the lead of H. William Ranelle, DO,
a marathoner in his 50s at the time,
that in order to get through a hectic
workday, he had to be in good
shape. So Dr. Vale fell back into
swimming, this time trying his hand
at open water swimming.

Dr. Vale considers lap swimming "very boring," but finds open water swimming to be an
exciting challenge.
Dr. Vale has recently taken to asking one of his three sons—all of whom swim—to come out
with him.

"One day I was swimming in
Lake Lewisville, which is near Dallas.
I felt something bump me and I
didn't think anything of it. Then I
saw on the news that there was an
alligator in Lake Lewisville. It was a
small alligator. Some lady had let an
alligator go; it was getting too big for
the house and it ended up in Lake
Lewisville. That put an end to my
swimming in Texas," he said.
Moving to northeast Pennsylva-
nia in 1999 when his children were
still small and being carried around,
he found he had back pain. It got
even worse with an 11-month case
of sciatica.
