10 November 2016 UPDATE by Denise Monasterio ASCRS Communications Manager Sunday Summit. During his record- breaking year in space, Captain Kelly captivated the world while laying the groundwork for the future of space travel and exploration. During his lecture, he will reveal what he learned during his 143-million-mile adventure—including lessons on leadership and teamwork, personal stories of perseverance, and the path that led him to secure his place in history. Special events There are also special events that take place at the meeting. Next year will mark the 35th anniversary of the ASCRS Annual Film Festival Awards. Established in 1982, the Film Festival Awards honor the best filmmakers in ophthalmolo- gy. Each year awards are given in 10 categories including Cataract Complications, Cataract/Implant Surgery, Glaucoma Surgery, In-House Production, Instruments & Devices, New Producer/Young Physician, New Techniques, Quality Teaching, Refractive/Cornea Surgery, and Spe- cial Interest. Another feature of the meeting will be the induction of individuals into the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame. The Ophthalmology Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to ophthalmology in clinical practice, research, education, invention, or humanitarian work. The inductees will be recognized in a ceremony during the ASCRS Opening General Session on Saturday, May 6. In the past 17 years, 57 outstanding oph- thalmologists have been chosen for induction by their peers. EW Contact information Monasterio: dmonasterio@ascrs.org New for 2017 At the 2017 ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress, attendees can expect to see a few changes. One major change is the stream- lining of the ASCRS course pro- gram. In order to provide attendees with the highest quality and most impactful educational content, a limited number of courses have been selected based on topic area and practical applicability. This adjust- ment was made based on attendee feedback gathered at the 2016 meet- ing, and ASCRS hopes it will provide a more balanced overall program with less content duplication. ASCRS has added a new spe- cialty day. ASCRS Refractive Day, also on Friday, May 5, is a one-day meeting for all refractive cornea and refractive IOL needs. This program is a comprehensive overview of all the advances in refractive surgery needed to improve outcomes, and attendees will learn about the latest advances in this exciting specialty. The program includes sessions on corneal refractive surgery, refractive cataract surgery, and refractive lens surgery. One exciting aspect of the 2017 meeting is the inclusion of U.S. astronaut Captain Scott Kelly as a featured speaker. Captain Kelly will present the Science, Medicine, and Technology Lecture during the tracks: clinical/medical and surgical/ ASC. Attendees can also register for additional optional programming at the meeting: T&N Tech Talks and the Association of Technical Per- sonnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) "Train the Trainer" course. ASCRS Glaucoma Day Sponsored by the ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee, this specialty day provides cutting-edge guidance to improve patient outcomes and change the treatment of glaucoma. Real-world case studies, acclaimed speakers, and debates on the latest surgical techniques and clinical advances make this a unique and valuable event. ASCRS Glaucoma Day will be held on Friday, May 5. Cornea Day Sponsored by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee and the Cornea Society, this is a one-day program on cornea and cataract surgery. Through panel discussions, case studies, debates, and surgical video reviews, this program provides a comprehensive overview of cutting- edge cornea surgery, management of complications, cornea ectatic and ocular surface dilemmas, and global hot topics that impact patient out- comes worldwide. Cornea Day will also be held on Friday, May 5. T he ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress will return to Los Angeles in 2017 after 27 years. The meeting will be held May 5–9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress is the largest U.S. meeting that integrates a scientific program dedicated to the needs of the anteri- or segment specialist with the lead- ing practice management program for comprehensive ophthalmology and subspecialties. At the meeting, attendees learn directly from the world's thought leaders in ophthalmology, broaden their networking connections, and return with the practical tools need- ed to improve their practice. The reason this is possible is because the ASCRS•ASOA Sympo- sium & Congress includes quality education for all staff members including surgeons, administrators, practice management staff, nurses, and technicians. There is special- ized programming for ASCRS Young Eye Surgeons (residents, fellows, and surgeons who are within their first 5 years of practice). There are also several specialty days: ASCRS Glaucoma Day, Cornea Day, ASCRS Refractive Day (described below in "New for 2017"), and ASOA optional workshops on Friday. ASCRS programming There will be extensive ASCRS programming including an Opening General Session, the ASCRS Inno- vators General Session, the Best of ASCRS 2017 General Session, and much more. ASOA programming The American Society of Ophthal- mic Administrators (ASOA) will offer various educational sessions and specialty programs for attendees. These include an Opening Gen- eral Session, BOOST: Business of Ophthalmology Standards courses, the COE lunch and program, and optional fee-based workshops. ASOA will offer networking opportunities through ASOA roundtables and the Consultants on Call program. Technicians and Nurses programming The Technicians and Nurses program will feature 36 courses across two ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress returns to Los Angeles in 2017
