After hearing the arguments and rebuttals, the audience will vote for the most per- suasive cases. Those interested in hearing about novel technology available outside of the U.S. might wish to attend the symposium cosponsored by ASCRS from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17. This event will be chaired by Edward Holland, MD, Cincinnati, and Stephen Lane, MD, Minneapolis. Other offerings Several informal, hour-long ses- sions will be held throughout the meeting in the Learning Lounge. Small group discussions on Saturday will center on topics like multifo- cal IOLs in patients who have had LASIK, maintaining a well-dilated pupil in cataract surgery, femtosec- ond laser-assisted cataract surgery, professional growth using social media, and more. Sunday's lounge discussions include topography for cataract surgery, treating residual refractive error, managing small pupils, and IOL power calculations for LASIK patients. Some of the instructional courses to note on Sunday are management and prevention of floppy iris syndrome, vitrectomy by the anterior segment surgeon, and personalizing cataract surgery with new devices, premium IOLs, and the femtosecond laser. Mon- day's instructional course offerings include fundamentals of anterior segment reconstruction, what to do in the event of posterior capsule rupture, how to convert to manual small incision cataract surgery in the event of a phaco complication, and telescopic IOLs for AMD. Tuesday's cataract instructional courses start off with pearls for eval- uating corneal topography and go on to include options like improving IOL power calculations, learning phaco chop technique, management of astigmatism, and managing mal- positioned IOLs, to name a few. Winners will receive the AAO-OPL trophy. On Monday from 12:15–1:45 p.m., the AAO Cataract Preferred Practice Patterns Committee will cohost a debate-style symposium on cataract controversies that might leave some surgeons unsure about certain practices. The first debated topic will be "Resolved: Intracameral Antibiotic is a Superior Approach to Postoperative Endophthalmitis Pro- phylaxis," with Francis Mah, MD, La Jolla, California, presenting the pro opinion and Terrence O'Brien, by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer October 16, from 12:15–1:45 p.m., chaired by Robert Osher, MD, Cin- cinnati, highlighting cutting-edge technology and techniques in this subspecialty. Later, from 3:45–5:15 p.m., four teams of the Ophthalmic Premier League (OPL) will present videos of challenging cataract cases. The audience will vote on their favorite, and judges will choose the winners in categories of best entertainer, best video, and best team. Robert Cionni, MD, Salt Lake City, will serve as the captain of the FB Eye Team, Mohan Rajan, MD, Chennai, India, as captain of the Black Cats, Mitchell Weikert, MD, Houston, as captain of the Jed-Eye Masters, and Eric Donnenfeld, MD, Rockville Centre, New York, as captain of Symposia, instructional courses, and small group sessions among choices T he American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) will host a variety of symposia, instructional courses, and other sessions specifically pertaining to cataract surgery at its 2016 annual meeting in Chicago on October 15–18. Symposia Sixteen experts will present their top five pearls for complicated phaco cases in 7 minutes or less during AAO's "Spotlight on Cataract." This fast-paced event will take place from 8:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. on Monday, October 17. Speakers will present a variety of complicated cases includ- ing on phaco in cases of uveitis, Fuchs' dystrophy, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Other compli- cated cataract case presentations will focus on posterior polar cataract, rock hard nucleus, weak zonules, a crowded anterior chamber, and more. To culminate this symposium, Roger Steinert, MD, Irvine, Cali- fornia, will present the 12th annual Kelman Lecture. Attendees can expect other exciting symposia from the meeting as well.
