3 EW ASCRS NEWS by Liz Hillman EyeWorld Staff Writer Celebrating EyeWorld's 20th anniversary October 2016 What to expect throughout the year A SCRS created EyeWorld magazine in 1996 to provide ASCRS members and the ophthalmic com- munity with balanced, multi-sourced information about surgical techniques, technologies, devices, and pharmaceuticals. Now, 20 years after the first issue was pub- lished in October 1996, EyeWorld is not only an award-winning clinical magazine, but an overarching brand with a multitude of products and activities. EyeWorld staff members attend meetings around the world to provide coverage both in written pieces and in video interviews. At select meetings, such as the ASCRS• ASOA Symposium & Congress, the EyeWorld magazine team produces a daily newspaper that covers onsite news and events for attendees. EyeWorld organizes a range of sym- posia, including CME events, to help increase the dialogue and facilitate the exchange of information. In addition, EyeWorld produces supple- ments regularly and has established a solid digital presence, with the most recent addition of an educa- tion hub. "EyeWorld is able to be a conduit for the industry to the doctors, providing quality education with- out promotion," said Donald Long, EyeWorld publisher. "It's all about quality education—no matter what, it comes down to that." This month EyeWorld kicks off its 20th anniversary celebration at the 2016 American Academy of Ophthalmology's annual meeting in Chicago. In addition to EyeWorld's regular meeting coverage, it has its own booth in the exhibit hall. Visit the EyeWorld booth #2773 and say "Happy birthday!" While there, you'll see the first time EyeWorld has brought its video studio to the AAO exhibit hall floor. There will be live recordings and broadcasts from some of the meeting's top speakers, as well as giveaways and information about EyeWorld rePlay, the EyeWorld Education Hub, and EyeWorld-supported events. EyeWorld will host three CME educational symposia and three corporate events at AAO. The CME events are "The Great Laser Cat- aract Surgery Debate: Weighing Benefits, Risks, and Implementation Options," "The Astigmatism and Presbyopia Correction Summit: Optimize Your Practice from Preop Planning to Postop Surprises," and "Ocular Surface Therapies and Refractive Outcomes: Developing Your Advanced Treatment Protocol." The corporate events will include "Corneal Cross-linking in the US: What You Need to Know," "A New MIGS on the Block," and "Floaters. To Treat or Not to Treat?" EyeWorld, ASCRS, and the Cornea Society will host "The After Party" on Friday, October 14. This is a great time to unwind and let loose for an evening. The 20th anniversary celebra- tion will continue at the ASCRS• ASOA Symposium & Congress on May 5–9, 2017 in Los Angeles with EyeWorld-sponsored educational events, giveaways, and parties. Details about those events will be shared in the coming months. Between the celebrations at the AAO annual meeting and ASCRS• ASOA Symposium & Congress, read- ers of the monthly magazine can expect to see a series reflecting on the last two decades of editorial con- tent in the publication. This series starts in this issue, with "Looking back at EyeWorld 20 years ago," in which the first chief medical editor, Marguerite McDonald, MD, Lyn- brook, New York, shares thoughts on the premier issue and the topics at the forefront of ophthalmology at the time (see page 18). Starting in November, EyeWorld will take a look at trends and activities as captured in the magazine since 1996. Top- ics will include how the magazine and brand have developed over the years and key areas of coverage in cataract, refractive, glaucoma, and cornea developments. evolve with new technologies and techniques to benefit patients, so will EyeWorld strive to keep doctors ahead of the curve, Mr. Long said. "Ophthalmology is so innova- tive and so attached to the technolo- gies that it can do nothing but keep improving. I think our job is to keep the doctors up to speed with all of these enhancements and improve- ments, but on even more of a global basis," he said. "We'll be looking at different ways of education, ways of reaching more doctors, and broad- ening the reach of our education through digital technologies and transmissions." EW Contact information Long: don@eyeworld.org In 1996, websites were not the standard for every organization. Since then, the web has become key for publications and news sources. EyeWorld's online presence and digi- tal offerings have developed great- ly over the last 20 years. Moving forward into EyeWorld's next stage of development, Mr. Long said readers can expect upgraded digital oppor- tunities. The new look and function- ality of EyeWorld.org will debut in 2017, and EyeWorld's video rePlay site is being upgraded to have larger viewing screens and easier access for a better user experience. The educa- tion hub is also being enhanced for additional functionality.
