127 September 2016 EW MEETING REPORTER aspects, which can be both an ad- vantage and disadvantage, she said. Ophthalmologists in the Navy often move around frequently depending on where they are stationed, as part of deployment, and even as part of humanitarian missions. Editors' note: The speakers have no financial interests related to their pre- sentations. Dr. Harrison noted that her presentation is relevant to her and is not the opinion of the Navy. International outreach A panel discussion moderated by Sarwat Salim, MD, Milwaukee, explored the topic of international outreach. Cathy Schanzer, MD, Memphis, Tennessee, Michael Brennan, MD, Burlington, North Carolina, and Mildred Olivier, MD, Chicago, also took part in the panel discussion. There are 32 million people in the world who are blind, Dr. Salim said, and most are concentrated in Asia. There is a profound need for ophthalmic care globally, she said. Dr. Schanzer described her mission work and the facility that she and her husband set up in Sierra Leone. The facility is open full time, and Dr. Schanzer generally goes in January and June to operate there. It's a challenge, she said, because there is only one ophthalmologist in Sierra Leone who is located in the capital city, so Dr. Schanzer is very busy when she visits to perform surgery. Limited access to water and electricity are also major challenges. Dr. Olivier described her mission work, particularly in Haiti. She high- lighted the importance of awareness and understanding the culture of the country and how it works. Skills transfer is also important, Dr. Olivier said, because when you leave the patients in that country, you need to know who will follow-up with them. Dr. Brennan also has experience working in other countries, and he stressed the importance of partners on these mission trips. You can't do it alone, he said, so you need to enlist partners to your cause. These could include government partners, univer- sities, and other organizations. Honorary lecture Bita Esmaeli, MD, Houston, gave the WIO Honorary Award Lecture on "Oncologic Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery: Perspectives from a Cancer Center." She discussed some of her "explorations" in oncologic oph- thalmic plastic surgery. This began with improving the quality of life in cancer patients. The next phase of her explorations dealt with moving beyond eye cancer surgery and look- ing at early detection of metastasis. From there, Dr. Esmaeli developed an interest in improving ocular sur- vival and visual function. Molecular basis for ocular and adnexal cancers was also an interest for Dr. Esmaeli, and she said this has been a focus for the last couple of years. She spoke about many of her clinical and research experiences. She said she is not done exploring, and in the next phase, she is hoping to do more humanitarian work. She also hopes to deliver more holistic patient care. EW Editors' note: Dr. Esmaeli has no finan- cial interests related to her presentation.
