EW CATARACT 36 byline plus face Device focus The seventh question was, "What is your preferred, standard, monofocal, non-accommodating IOL that you use almost every sur- gery day? Include brand and model. And why?" Reasons offered for each, ranked by frequency of response, were: • Abbott Medical Optics ZCB00: Good experience with quality of vision, ease of insertion, small incision, and clear optics • Alcon SN60WF: Extensive world- wide track record and stabili- ty, ease of insertion, forgiving material; negatives on glistenings but seems improved now; felt by many to be the best overall finan- cial deal for ASC with bundling of other surgical materials • Bausch + Lomb L161AO: Extreme- ly clear material, long track record of silicone safety, and preference for 3-piece IOL • Bausch + Lomb Akreos: Forgiving of imperfect capsulorhexis, very stable placement in the bag, and good quality vision • Bausch + Lomb MX60 EnVista: Centers well, clear material, no glistenings • Abbott Medical Optics Z9002: Long personal track record of clear optics and stable centration • Abbott Medical Optics ZA9003: Preference for both 3-piece and acrylic attributes I hope this information demon- strates once again that there is more than one way to skin a cat. For me, the most interesting finding was the low number of ophthalmologists who would opt for a multifocal or Crystalens (Bausch + Lomb) in his or her own eyes even if cost is not a factor. I will go out on a limb and speculate that in our highly visual subspecialty, vision quality without compromise is higher on our list of desired outcomes after cataract sur- gery with intraocular lens implanta- tion than in the general population. One respondent confessed that he has seen obsessive compulsive and fussy tendencies in himself and is unwilling to venture into the unknown of anything other than a conventional IOL. To combine 2 well-known aphorisms: Physician, know thyself! EW Editors' note: Dr. Gossman is in private clinical practice at Eye Surgeons & Physicians, St. Cloud, Minnesota.
